Root Why do people use different ROMs

I was always wondering why people would install a different ROM. What is the main purpose of changing the ROM. And what is the chance you brick the N7 if you do.

Generally for additional features, improve performance, battery life and the ability to add themes etc.

Unless you do something silly like use the wrong recovery or try to flash a non N7 ROM on to the N7, chances of bricks are pretty slim.

Is it something you're thinking about?

Some roms run smoother on some devices while on other devices they could run horribly. Literally every device is different so while one rom may work for one person, it may not react as well for someone else. Battery life can variety greatly from rom to rom

Thanks for the explanation. It is not really something I want to do. I am a 'vanilla' person. I was just interested why people would go thru the trouble of replacing the ROM.

I don't really tweak my systems - don't do that in Windows and Linux either. Working with computers since 1958 I have learned how to stay out of trouble.

Soft bricks with the nexus 7 usually only occur if you do something wrong, and are quite easy to fix. Hard bricks of the nexus 7 only occur if you're careless enough to flash an incompatible bootloader, or actually delete the bootloader.

Its nearly impossible to brick this thing by flashing a ROM. Just make sure you're trying to flash things that are meant for your device.

Most people flash one to have features or customizations not available on the stock ROM. This is the main reason I run CM10.1
