Why does Android hate my school's wifi?

My university uses Cisco Airnonet access points (not sure which model) in just about every building, including my apartment. While these work fine with laptops, they hardly work on both my Android devices (Captivate and N7). In my apartment, the connection constantly drops and the signal strength never goes above "Fair" despite there being an AP in the hall right outside the door. Even when I'm in a classroom and staring at the AP 10 feet away, the connection usually doesn't drop (although it still does occasionally) but it's either fair or poor.

Each AP broadcasts 3 networks on 3 channels 1, 6, and 11 with all 3 networks on each channel. The first is the regular secure network, which requires a client certificate and has full internet access. The second is the instructions network restricted to the certificate download site, and the third is eduroam.

Checking it with Wifi Analyzer, the signals on a channel (usually channel 1) will frequently disappear, sometimes when they had signal strengths above -60dbm, and then reappear a few seconds later. Sometimes all 3 networks on the channel disappear, sometimes just one or two. So that answers why my connection drops so frequently. Using inssider on my laptop, the strength only fluctuates mildly (>5dBm).

Any idea why this happens on just my Android devices? My roommate's iphone works just fine. The school prohibits using personal routers, which I am completely ignoring because using their wifi is just crap and makes it very frustrating using my tablet. Hopefully they don't notice my hidden SSID.

i never knew why but i always one-bar wifi on any Android phone. it seems to stay connected well enough though. i can still use Pandora on my Merit at work with a one-bar signal. i have learned to take the signal bars with grains of salt.

now if i point my phone directly at the router five feet or less away, the one-two bars goes to full.

Yeah, I know the bars don't mean much, but it's the signal that just keeps dropping. Back and forth on wifi analyzer.

I have a Galaxy Tab and an LG phone. On vacation in different hotels, they will usually expereience more wifi disconnects than my laptop or my kids' iphone or ipad.

I went to the University of Dayton my freshman year of college and we used this exact same thing, and it literally destroyed the battery life on my device because it was always searching for Wifi signal.

Have you maybe tried talking to Cisco about it to see if there is something they can do?
