Help Why doesn't Google Voice work now?

I used Google Voice for my voicemail for 2 years. I had to send my Samsung Galaxy Nexus in for repair. When I got it back and reinstalled everything, Google Voice was not able to automatically work like it used to. It kept giving me an error message about Verizon not being able to work with it and some instructions about setting it up manually or something.

I called Verizon multiple times. It seemed like each representative told me something different to try and none of them worked.

Sorry, it's been a few weeks and I forgot the details. Anyway, I feel like I'm in some kind of limbo because I still get Google Voice emails, but I think my Verizon voice mail is also still connected.

If there is somewhere with instructions for what I need to do to my sure my Google Voice voicemail is working correctly, I'd love to see them.

Part of my difficulty troubleshooting is that when I'm not busy, I'm home with no way to call myself and test things out. I don't want to keep bothering my friends to call me and I don't get many phone calls anymore - all SMS (which LED notifications aren't working for... another story), email and Facebook.

This is one of many frustrating issues I have with my Verizon/GN/Android that should be easy and simple (like it was for 2 years - I installed the app, set it up and it worked).
 
I got that error as well. However, as far as I can tell, it still seems to be working. My voicemails are still going to Google Voice. My guess is that it couldn't figure out the voicemail programming number. However, the voicemail number is attached to the phone line, not the phone. So if you never changed your voicemail back to Verizon's, you should still be on Google Voice.

To confirm that, call your phone (or have someone else call you), and just let it ring until it goes to voicemail. If it goes to your Google Voice message, then its working just fine. As far as I know, that's really the only way you can test it, since Verizon handles forwarding the number to voicemail when your phone rings too long.

If not, I believe the programming number is *89(your Google voice number).
 
The error message sounds intimidating, but it's actually pretty easy to set it up (I had the same issue).

  • Go into the phone app
  • Press the menu buttton and go to Settings
  • Under "Voicemail service", select Google Voice

And that should do it ;)
