Why don't apps refresh when I open them?

What can I do? Should I try an app that closes them for me?

I have a few apps with this problem, but lets take youtube app for example. I start the app and go to Subscriptions, watch my videos. Then the next day I open the app again but I find it's still in Subscriptions and not up to date plus there is no refresh button. It's in the same exact state as when I left it last time. So I have to click What to Watch, then back to Subscriptions so it will refresh. This is so stupid.

I wouldn't mind waiting another .5 seconds for an app to open if it will refresh every time. Whats the use of this android system of leaving things open with no exit button when it just makes it harder to use in the end?

Have you tried holding down the button that takes you to the home screen or menu? (I'm not sure if you can do this on your device.)
If you hold it down long enough, a list of open apps should appear and you can swipe each of them off the menu, which closes them. Try this after you use your apps.

I think there's some apps that close them for you; I'm not sure.
