Root Why/How do you root a Maxx?

Ok, so, I have a droid razr maxx.

I love my phone and was so very excited to get the JB upgrade. But now that I have it, I've learned that I can no longer use my phone and the free wifi hotspot capabilities. I can manage the USB tether using PDAnet, but it's far less convienient seeing as how I use my Maxx for xbox live, tablets, and laptops.. It basically powers my entire life.

I've heard the only way to do it, is to root the phone and get ICS back.

Is this the only way? What does rooting your phone do? Where are the positives?

If it's worth it... how do I do it?

And, if I don't like it, or have a phone problem... can I get it back to factory settings so that I can turn it in for Insurance?

I know I've asked many questions today, but I could really use some answers here.

Thanks So Much!

First and foremost, you can NOT revert back to ICS once you have JB on the device. The bootloader is locked and will prevent you from EVER doing it. Please for God's sake, don't try, it will fail.
That being said, you can easily root your device by using RAZRBlade, which there is a link for it on the top of the page under the all things root section.
As far as tethering goes, I can't help much with that, as I don't tether, myself.
Rooting your phone gives you more options to adjust settings, or even replace the operating system altogether. My advice is to read as much as you can about the process before doing it, so you know what the risks and benefits are.
You will be able to restore the factory settings as soon as someone comes up with a file called a "fastboot" for this update.
Hope this helps you, and welcome to the forum!

If you haven't already done it, rooting is easy with the RAZRBlade as Bugly mentioned if you follow the directions which is stressed in the post. And someone has developed a way to get back to factory settings (stock), so you should be good to go.

If you are rooted, the tether app I find that works well is the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" app in the Google Play Store. There is one called "Wireless Tether for Root Users" also, but that one didn't work for me. One has a yellow WiFi icon and one has a green one. You want the yellow one.

Good luck.
