why is android so power efficient vs. winmo?

I'm a longtime winmo guy at work and in my personal life, my favorite winmo phone was my samsung blackjack II. BJ2 was my fav because of the form factor and I didn't like the touchscreen/pro devices I had or worked with. It was mostly the OS, MS made it so much easier w/o a touchscreen.

I'm wondering though, I now have an HTC Inspire which is widely thought of as the tiniest-batteried android around at 1230mah but I could easily get 2days out of it without charging if I wanted and didn't play a bunch of games or netflix. It's especially better after the gingerbread update.

The BJ2 with a 1700mah batt (138% inspire!) about a third the screen size and a fifth the cpu clock would never go more than 24 hours.

Why's that so? I don't think it was a bad battery, there were plenty of BJ2s at work that all were about the same as mine, my htc wizard and every other winmo thing we had at work was similar. Does winmo not have a sleep mode like android does? is the OS running full time? any CPU throttling?

I'm pretty sure the inspire and most other newer phones have led backlighting and the winmo phones I'm thinking of were probably ccfl (did they use ccfl in phones?) does that make a huge difference?

Linux is more efficent than Windows. Really that is the comparison. Android is built to handle processes much different than WP. But there are other things as well in your comparison, You purchased a much newer phone than the BJ2, most phone batterys will last about 2 years before they need to be replaced (300-500) full charge cycles. Also the technology to build the phone has changed, it may take less battery to run your snapdragon processor at 1000 MHz than it did to run the dual core ARM 9 at 260 MHz.

I used to have a tmo dash back in the day, as did one of my co workers and those batteries also just tanked and only lasted a few hours at best
