Why is Maps App drawing power?

Why is the Maps App using power when the app is not being used? While not a big thing, I am curious why and whether I need to do anything about it.

I checked my battery use this afternoon after being off the charger over 7 hours and found it at 70%. About 78% of the usage was for the Screen and 16% was for Apps. The leading App at 3.6% was Maps. I have not used Maps at all. Mainly I used an ebook reader, email, calendar, LinkedIn and Tapatalk each of which used .1 to .6%.

Pretty sure if you have location services on, then any app can "track" you, using Maps I would guess. I tried out Google Plus this morning (for a couple minutes), and my Maps "Keep Awake" went up to 10 minutes with no map use. Leaving location services on isn't "supposed" to use battery unless an app uses it... but many apps use it!

Yes, that seems to be the cause. I unchecked the Google Location Services and now maps is way down the list of apps using power. Thanks

Click on the Layers button and check to see if you have the traffic layer active. I always try to remember to turn it back off after looking at traffic. When the traffic layer is active, Android reports your location and speed to let Google know how fast traffic is moving. I wouldn't mind sharing this data, but it drains the battery faster.

I also do not use the Latitude feature.
