why is market update helper needed?

Just curious what is going on here: Why on earth does the play store alert me to updates that the app's page doesn't know about, and why does titanium backup's "market update helper" fix this problem? It sure seems like there are two sources for update information and they don't talk to each other? Who would design updates like that?

Hackers who want you to install their malware on your device. That 'update' is a socalled 'Trojan Horse', my friend...

Good spotting!

I don't think so. If I wait a few hours, the individual app eventually becomes aware there really is an update. Or if there are multiple apps to be updated, I can get all the updates, including ones for individual apps that haven't noticed yet. (In fact all the market update helper does is create a 2nd dummy update so you'll have more than one and don't have to wait for the individual app page to notice).

I'm just trying to understand google's ridiculous backward update structure.
