Help Why no FM radio on Nexus ?

i used to agree that the fm radio was a waste....until last April when the town i live in was struck by tornadoes ...i live in Alabama and the state had 36 tornadoes that day. We were without power for 6 days. ....The night all of it happen when the power went off. That fm radio app on my Droid X was a life saver....

What part of Bama do you live in? We made it through those, but less than 30 miles away wasn't so lucky...east side of Athens.

Honestly, why use the fm radio when you can use iheartradio or tunein. Seriously great apps...

What if you live in a coverage area gap? Can't rightly stream like that. I could probably pick up FM Stations where I work, but I barely get enough cell signal to make/receive a call, much less stream radio.

A few miles from the HSV international Airport. We got lucky as well in my neighborhood but a lot of Madison County got hit. Some friends and I went out a few days helping with cutting trees and it was crazy how much damage was done.
also depending on what situation your in those apps will drain more battery power.
Loved the FM radio on my DroidX - streaming is nice, but it kills the battery on 4g. Personally if I'm going to stream for an extended period of time I tend to kick down to 3g first. Given that they use the headphone wire as the antenna it doesn't take up much space inside the phone at all. Unfortunately that ship has already sailed for the nexus though, no FM radio.
Was in your neighborhood over new years.

Because not all of us have unlimited data plans. Mine is for 500 MB, and streaming radio would probably push it over the limit.

Streaming radio doesn't use a lot of bandwidth. I love TuneIn Pro (got the pro for free on Amazon)
As for coverage, let's just say I use it more camping than our regular radio as 1) I prefer the local stations 2) better cell reception than radio.
I live in Alabama too! Thankfully we didn't get hit by those tornadoes here in Auburn, but I can see the advantage of an FM radio.

You could buy something like THIS to compliment your phone; I just ordered one yesterday. I didn't order it for the FM radio, as I use Tune In Radio app for all my local radio stations. Seeing how most phones that have a FM radio require a headset to be used to serve as the antenna; then this could be a viable option for you.

Yep, requiring a headset to use as an antenna really disables some of the usefulness of an FM antenna in a phone anyway.

So I got the Sony MW600 in today that I mentioned two posts above. This thing is pretty nice and so small. I'm going to write a review and put it in a different section of the forum; but wanted to mention a few quick things about the FM radio here since that's what this post was about.
The FM radio works really well. I'm currently/temporarily living back in my home town and all the local radio stations are about 50 miles away. With my Droid Incredible's built-in FM radio, I couldn't pick up any stations from here; which was sad because I think it should be able to work like any radio and pick up those stations. The Sony MW600 had no problems picking up all my stations.
One benefit I now have again, is that I can listen to all the Razorback live broadcasts via this FM radio. While I can pick up that station via Tune In Radio, I wasn't able to get these events because the university doesn't permit their live events to be streamed over the internet; they have exclusive rights for that and want you to buy a membership at their website to do this.
Just some tid-bits should someone be looking to add an FM radio to their Nexus; the WM600 is a viable option.
