Why No Google Calendar Event Notification?

Have a Google Calendar synced to my HTC One X+ (first Droid phone for me). As a test I created an event 10 minutes ahead on the Google Calendar on the website. It had a POP-UP reminder configured out 0 minutes before the event. I see the event come through to the phone but the phone didn't do anything to remind me of the event? I must be missing a setting somewhere?

Okay. The phone DID make a chime and vibrate the second time I tested (just wasn't holding phone on first test), but, it didn't wake the screen up and display the event!? Even if it DID do that, what if I'm not looking at or holding the phone when the event reminder comes up? I'll never know about the reminder. I need the phone to vibrate or something every 15 min until I clear the reminder. Do I need Tasker to do this? I'm not one to be constantly looking at/using my phone!

Just a sign of the times that developers of these phones (including Apple) are people with the phone on their person at all times they are awake.

Guess maybe I needs this?

Look at Google Calendar, settings, set alerts & notifications. It might be different wording the HTC, I have a SG3.

Well, duh, found the setting in Calendar. Changed it to from status bar notification to alert and set reminder time 5 minutees. All it did was display a big calendar icon and minimal information on the lockscreen if I turned the display on right after the alert sound. If you turn the display on later, there's no indication of the event reminder on the lockscreen anymore (clears by itself.) Furthermore, the 5 minute reminder didn't work, 5, then 10 minutes later no sound, vibration nothing and I made sure to do nothing with the phone when I added the second test even and the initial alert came through.

This is a disappointing area of Android. I would have expected better. Hello Pure Calendar Widget (Agenda) and Calendar Snooze.

By the way, Hadron, you're the man. Thanks for all your posts. I hope someone is paying you to answer all these newbies questions like me. It sure is helping a picky user like me transition from iOS to Android a lot quicker. One of the benefits maybe in general of the Android "community" - lots of "power users" willing to help others.

Guide and Moderator pay rates are of course commercially sensitive information, but let's just say it's a nice round number (with the emphasis on "round") ;)

Looking at Calendar Snooze. Don't seem to see an option for "Quiet Hours" so I don't get reminders between certain hours. Is that controlled elsewhere in the OS or should I try a different app?

Looks like Nudnik may be the better option for me.

Ah, you have a point - Calendar Snooze handles reminders, but I'd overlooked the quiet hours part of your requirements :(

There are a number of apps that can handle scheduling of quiet hours for the phone. These include:

* audiomanager pro - define profiles for different sound/vibrate settings, and can set schedules for these profiles

* timeriffic - can control more than just audio settings, based again on day/time

* tasker - extremely flexible automation based on time, location, orientation, various system events...

There are many others (e.g. Llama is often suggested as an alternative to Tasker), I just cite these as things I've used myself.

Of course if you just want to do this for these alerts and Nudnik does that then problem solved :)

You read my mind.

Nudnik, the notification (and all available themes) are EXTREMELY UGLY. Plus the Pop-Up option doesn't work within Widget Lock lock screen.

Calendar Event Reminder (CER) was prettier, and the pop-up worked but it totally replaces the lockscreen.

Full circle back to Calendar Snoozer. Works perfect. Uses the stock alert pop-up.

I'm using Llama (seems like a simplified version of Tasker) to just put the entire phone into a silent profile at night, when at home.

This is taking all weekend to learn the ropes but having fun doing it. Frustrating at times though. Need to exercise patience on the learning curve.
