Why upgrade to JB if tethering/hotspot will be killed?

I picked up open garden app, once you work the bugs out it works good. make sure you have a wifi connection to download it on both devices before you do a stand alone connection.

For those of you that want tether back (w/unlimited plan) do yourself a favor and spend the 10 mins to root the phone and do the sql hack. Works flawless with built-in VZ hotspot.

Is nobody using EasyTether - either with JB or ICS (works just fine for me under ICS)?

Uh, EasyTether user? That would be me. The OTA update to JB happened about 10 hours ago (this happened while I'm in Germany!!!) and I just tested EasyTether. It works as always although the actual connection icon at the top of the screen is the Android/Jelly Bean icon (think of a kidney shape with a "happy face" like this::) and two little antennas sticking up). The ET in a white circle icon shows up, as before, when USB tethering is enabled.

Bottom line: EasyTether works with JB.

Yep, Foxfi updated to work on JB and I have upgraded to JB. One FYI, I did have to change the security setting for the wifi connection on my laptop from WPA to WPA2 to work with the new Foxfi upgrade. After finding that one small problem all is good and liking JB.

So I've been following this thread with interest. On my Razr my Android version is 4.1.2. I do not believe I'm rooted because Titanium-Root does not work and Root Checker reports "This device does not have proper root access."

Now here's the kicker - Not only does PdaNet+ wireless tethering work, but the stock Mobile Hotspot ALSO works!

And I have NOT signed up and paid Verizon the monthly fee!

Not complaining at all but just curious why/how? Should I buy a lottery ticket? :)

It is the Foxfi app...they broke the JB lock code and "free" wifi hotspot is working again. Foxfi is now also PdaNet

ok- but as said my stock Mobile Hotspot works like a charm so I don't use the other downloaded apps - that's what has my head spinning.

Then you have "mobile hotspot" included with your data plan. Many of us do not and would have to pay our carriers $20. more per month to have a mobile hotspot.

Brobox - I can guarantee you that I don't. Yes, I have the unlimited plan but there is nothing itemized for mobile hotspot, nor any $20 charge. I have never paid not would I ever pay the charge when there are so many other free options.

Now, pre 4.1.2 I was rooted and Mobile Hotpsot worked then - again not sure why. The upgrade came through and I thought I might lose my wireless tethering and would have to re-root. But, to my surprise, Mobile Hotspot still worked. So then I thought maybe somehow I didn't lose my root with the upgrade to 4.1.2 ... so, as said, Root Checker reports no root, and apps which require rooting don't work either.

Hey, I'm not complaining, just curious as to how this might happen.

Do you need foxfi and PDAnet+ ?
I haven't used them yet, but have both apps downloaded. It seems they are from different developers. Is there a good walk thru for the newbie wanting to use these apps.
