Why Would Anyone Buy Android?

That’s the question Business Insider is asking people in a 12 question survey posted this morning. The way they ask the question, in all caps (cruise control), simply reeks of snooty iPhone users wondering why they aren’t on top anymore. It would seem that some reasons which are clear as air, just aren’t clear enough [...]

Let's make this more fun: Why did YOU buy android?

I bought it because:
a) It's open source. I came off the blackberry storm2, which RIM released and then just left to DIE. With android, the hardware may become outdated but since it's open source, there's no way it'll ever be completely obsolete... there will always be SOME way to run what everyone else is running.
b) Apple's passing the "cool company that gets me" phase and is moving into the "corporate screw-our-loyal-customers-out-of-their-money" phase. They're not quite there yet, but they're getting there, and I'd rather be with google, that's still in the "gets me" phase (but it's probably only a matter of time...).
c) again, open source. fully customizable, which means I can get what I want, not what the manufacturer thinks i SHOULD want.

My jailbroken iphone was pretty bad ass. I am glad that I made the switch though. I love my phone!

I use an Android phone for several reasons. Here are a few examples:
  1. I can create a "contact" for wrong numbers. If they call my regular cell phone number, they go straight to voicemail. If they call my Google Voice number, they're blocked entirely.
  2. I like the keyboard. When I have Shift or Caps Lock on, the letter labels reflect that. When I start typing two or three letters of a word, I can choose the appropriate autocomplete suggestion instead of having the OS decide which autocomplete is best for me.
  3. The OS integrates fully with Google Voice.
  4. Turn-by-turn navigation.
  5. The ability to play Flash on demand (instead of automatically or not at all).
