Help Wi-Fi and LTE problem

Mikito1976

Android Enthusiast
Hey guys, just wanted to post this here to see if there are more with the problem that I've been having. OK, here is what's going on.
Under mobile network where you can select your preferred network type there are three options.
LTE, 3G and 2G. The problem that I'm having is that when I have my Wi-Fi on and I have LTE selected my phone will not connect to the mobile data network. The only way to get the LTE connected is by turning off the Wi-Fi and placing a call, then it would connect. I don't have that problem if I switch to the option 3G which kills the purpose of getting the LTE version.
Anyways I called Metro Pcs to see if it was something with my connectivity or my sim card but they claim everything is good on their end so I called Motorola few times and now I'm getting a replacement, I'll see how that goes.
If anyone had experience something like this or similar let me know.

I have the exact same problem and there are quite a few people who have already posted to Motorola's own forums that have the same problem. It looks like this may be a problem with this phone.

Update!

Thanks for your reply.

OK, here is my update. I got the new phone yesterday and when I switched phones the problem seems to still present. Very frustrating, so I decided to just keep the 3G on while in my home then I will switch to 4G LTE if I'll go out. Here comes the crazy thing. Today I needed to go out so to make things easier I decided to put a widget on my home screen to toggle the Wi-Fi. Moreover, I searched on the Play Store a data toggler to switch from 3G to 4G but I didn't have no luck. Before I left the house I turned my wifi off and connected to my LTE. Now here is the real crazy thing when I got back I connected to my wifi and I saw that the icon for LTE was on my status bar so I decided to send a picture with really low hopes but to my surprise the picture was send. I've been testing sending more pictures (MMS) with the wifi on and so far its been working. Crossing my fingers that it will stay like that. Not sure why or how it got fixed but I will suggest to start by placing a widget to toggle the Wi-Fi on and off. I will continue to update about this situation.

Go to google play store and search for: servicemode shortcut.
Use it on all my phones. Bypass secret menu codes to access phone settings for radio settings , both voice and data.

I have my phone rooted and am running the Xposed module "Gravity Box" which in turn gives me a lot more quick settings buttons in the quick settings panel. One of these buttons allows me to chose between 2G, 3G, or LTE for my data connection. If I keep this setting at 3G I will connect to the data network via 3G automatically after disconnecting from a WiFi network. If I then try to change it to LTE I will initially connect to the network via LTE but will then be disconnected after a minute or two and my phone will not connect back to the network until I change this setting back to 3G. According to MetroPCS, all my settings are correct and my SIM card tests correctly. They have no explanation for why this is happening other than it is the fault of the phone itself. At this point it looks as if Motorola has a big problem with this phone and BUYER BEWARE! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PHONE!

Guys I do believe I have found the reason and it's not the phone, it has to do with both Metro and T-Mobile not doing things right. After hours and different suggestions I believe that I have found the fix to it. It has to do with the APN settings. I will be trying to make a video showing my findings and that it works. It seems that Metro and T-Mobile either they are clueless or they just don't care or maybe both. Anyways if you are having this problem let me know.

Again, it's not the phone, this phone it's great specially for the price. Everything works superb for me and the only hiccup was the Wi-Fi and LTE situation other then that I can't complaint.

I'm not sure what you mean about T-Mobile/Metro not doing things right? Are you saying the APN settings they have posted on their website is not right, or just that the APN settings were not correctly pushed to your phone?

Sorry for the late reply. I said what I said because when I called Metro numerous time and they attempted to set my APN settings they failed to set them up right at least for this phone. Now, after days of searching and lots of reading and trying different things I found what's working for me now. I no longer have the problem that if I turned off the Wi-Fi the LTE would not connect, moreover, I don't have to place a call to get the LTE connected. I'm able to send MMS without turning off Wi-Fi and all the other steps. I was planning to make a video to show my findings but with 3 kids, wife and school it was kind of impossible, I'll tried my best to make it tomorrow.

Please do make video when you have a chance or can you link to source of fix? Thank you!

Remember that I am not responsible for any damage you might do to your phone. Moreover, I'm not guaranteeing that this would work for you. I'm passing what I was able to find that its working for me. All you be doing its creating a new APN settings, that's it. Do not edit any of the ones that came with the phone, just create the new one by pressing the plus sign in the top right. Make sure to write everything the way it is, specially the APN and the MMSC. Again I hope this work for everyone.

Hey guys, sorry for the delay but I just got done making the video which I'm going to upload to my YouTube and place the links there for the pics as well.

This worked for me. I was able send and receive MMS messages without a problem and was able to leave my home or office, detach from the WiFi at those locations and have the phone automatically and quickly attach to the LTE network and remain attached. I took a walk over to Hollywood Blvd and Vine to see what type of speed I would get with a speed test of the network. Both MetroPCS and T-mobile have stated that they have not started merging old CDMA sites into T-mobiles network in this location yet so I did not expect wonderful results. I selected that location because it is right outside "Katsuya's" front door and with the amount of stars and paparazzi using their cell phones there everyday, you know that the cell phone providers are putting their best foot forward there. My phone returned these results...

Ping - 42ms
Download - 10.33Mbps
Upload - 9.84Mbps

These are decent (not stellar) LTE speeds and considering the fact that the two networks have yet to be merged here, they are probably pretty good.

I would still caution anyone considering purchasing this phone though. Motorola would have much better served their customers by using a dual core processor and putting the money saved into an additional gigabyte of RAM for the system and apps to run in. No modern 4G LTE phone should be saddled with only 1Gb of RAM to do this. The lack of RAM for the system and apps to run in kills this phone very quickly. My last phone was a dual core processor phone but it had 2Gb's of RAM for the system and apps to run in. I can only run about 1/3 the apps on this phone that I was able to run on the dual core phone with more RAM. This phone is constantly running at its limit and I have even gone as far as to remove Motorola's junk such as Motorola Assist and Motorola Merge. If you expect more from your phone than just the very basics (Calls, texting, and appointment scheduling) you probably will not be happy with this phone. When will manufacturers learn that the fastest way to speed up a device is not via the processor but is with more RAM for the system and apps to run in? Once there is a proper amount of RAM, then more powerful processors do the trick. Not the other way around.

Wrong section, it's for the section homescreen , don't know how that happened.

I'm glad someone else posted their Homescreen. It looks nice.

I'm very surprised how low is the activity in this section. Even when I had the Alcatel Fierce I saw more activity there, not to mention the LG Optimus, LG Esteem, and the LG Spirit sections. Anyways, glad to see someone else posting the Homescreen like I mentioned earlier. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sure the activity on this forum will pick up, over time. This is still a new phone, less than a month old. Because it is merely a model that added LTE, it didn't get a big launch. Nor is it widely available yet; I'm not aware of any carriers that sell the Moto G LTE directly yet, they all still sell the original Moto G -- I'm hoping that starts to chance soon. Last, many who would have bought this phone already bought the original Moto G and aren't ready to upgrade.

This phone is a great value, so at this point it is just a matter of building up a large enough user base for the activity to pick up here.

Yes I just heard about the 4g model today! Wtf? This phone hasn't gotten proper attention. I know it's almost exactly as the original moto g, but that sd card slot makes a huge difference to some of us. I was honestly contemplating buying the moto g originally, but the lack of the micro SD card slot turned me away. But now that I see that there's a model with an sd card slot I gotta buy it!

Thank you Mikito1976! Here is the fix simplified and I believe this is only an issue with MetroPCS. Instead of making a new APN, which may mess up your SMS settings, I just edited the T-Mobile LTE APN. First I renamed it MetroPCS LTE, but that doesn't matter. Then I edited the APN address from fast.t-mobile.com to fast.metropcs.com. That's it. I hope it works for you.

Thank you. I was having an issue when my phone left a wifi service area, such as my home, and it wouldn't pick up on the data side of the cellular network. Neither LTE, 4G, or any icons to signify a data connection of any kind would show up, just the bars for signal strength. I would have to either reboot, or switch airplane mode on and off to get data service going again. This change to fast.metropcs.com rather than fast.tmobile.com seem to have done the trick. I'm on a Note 4 by the way. Hope this info helps others out down the road.
