Help WI-FI battery usage

When my wi-fi is connected for about 5-6 hours a day my battery doesn't last full day, whereas when my wi-fi is not connected but still on I have more than 30% battery left at the end of the day.

I find it very strange.
Any idea?

In the Advanced WiFi Menu, there's an option called Best WiFi Performance (I think, not sure if that's the exact name on the stock ROM), is that checked?
