Wi-Fi hotspot encryption Windows XP not working

I'm trying to configure Wi-Fi access point on my phone and connect to it from my Windows XP (Service Pack 3) laptop. Well, there's not much to configure, just security type, AP name and AP password. But. It only works when I set encryption settings to "no encryption". Although my laptop always detects the access point and shows current security type correctly, after entering the password and trying to connect to it I still can't use Internet. Like I said, except for the case when encryption is disabled.
Android version: 4.0.3

Which security type are you using?
I have a similar issue with my WiFi music streaming box. It has a habit of adding an extra space to the end of the password. Count the number of characters in the router and on the tablet just in case something similar is happening there.

Try choosing a password that ends in an alphanumeroc character as a symbol may be what's causing the problem. (I think that's the issue in my case.)
