Help Wi-Fi on when home smart action profile...

I'm trying to set up a Smart Actions profile to automatically turn on Wi-Fi when I get home, but after I choose location as the trigger, the Wi-Fi option is greyed out. It won't let me select it it. Is this normal or is there another way to set the profile up?

I've only played with Smart Actions a little, so I could be wrong. But I think it uses wifi to determine what your location based on the available network (at some point you tell it that 'this' is my home wifi). Since it bases location on wifi, you can't turn on wifi, because it has to already be on.

Smart Actions requires Wifi to be on to trigger certain actions. I found a Verizon app called "Verizon Wifi Auto-on" It periodically turns on Wifi to see if you're within a known network area. If so, it will connect to your (already) known network (allowing Smart Actions to work). If no known network is there, it will shut off Wifi until the next check. I've been using this to enable some location-aware rules, and it's been working for me.

My wifi turns on automatically when it detects a wifi connection. If I am at work and it detects wifi, I click on do not connect remind me later and it stays on 3G. When I arrive home, it asks the same thing and I click on connect. It is not in my Smart Actions. It was this way when I got the phone. The only Smart Action I have set up is the Battery Extender.

I too was using Verizon Wi-Fi Auto-on, but found it too unreliable for location, plus it was using a lot of battery. I tried it over two different test periods, and found I was using more battery than just leaving wifi on all the time. (I have 2 location-based Smart Actions set for Home and Work to turn off cellular data and run only a wifi).

I recently tried Auto WiFi app. It is more reliable, is rated higher, and has more settings than Verizon's app. You can set:

• the polling time interval;
• the max distance; and
• the method - either cell towers or wifi polling, etc.)

Instead of typing in an address like on Verizon's, you have to set each location one time while you are at that location. This was the only (but slight) downside, as I wasn't able to enter all my locations at once.

So far, it has worked perfectly and is not affecting the battery much at all. I currently have it set to poll:

• every half hour;
• with a 750m radius; and
• use cell towers (called "GSM-Provider") instead of wifi for location.

Couple things. First, Verizon's wifi auto on does not turn wifi on at all to see where you are. It uses Google services for location. Second, it doesn't even rate showing up on either the stock or System Monitor battery history, so I'm having a hard time understanding how you guys see it as a battery hog. Google location services process doesn't show up as a top battery consuming app, in case you were wondering.

I use it all the time to kick wifi on and off when I'm at or away from home, then SA does the rest when I connect to my home wifi.

The only way it can determine your location is by wifi? I wish someone would invent a smartphone with built in GPS so it knows where it is. Oh, wait...

Then the GPS would have to run constantly. This would completely demolish the battery.
