Wi-Fi tether on virgin Mobile version

So I never saw the WiFi tether app since I got my one v a few days ago on virgin mobile. I got tired of the sense launcher and installed nova prime and opened the app drawer and saw this:

I was like what

It works without root.

Interesting discovery! Looks like it shows up using the free version of Nova Launcher as well. So apparently the app is installed somewhere on the phone. The default launcher must be blocking/hiding it.

I don't particularly want a new launcher -- perhaps there's a way to get it running with the default launcher? I installed Root Explorer and did a search, and I see that WifiRouter.apk (the installer) is in the \system\app folder. But when I try to re-install it, it simply says "Application not installed".

Any other ideas?

I wonder whether or not tethering could be activated using the same method as the one on the LG Optimus V.

You download Quick Settings from the Play Store and then pick the tethering option.

I also found a tethering widget that works with ICS phones. I can't test this myself at the moment, because I have a different phone, but I will test it when I get a the chance as my friend has this phone.

Here is the ICS tethering widget BTW, it's called Fattin Hotspot Toggle.

Did you actually connect to it hotspot and get data? If not then try it. You have no data connection. It gets hidden by an xml entry in /system/customize/

I will put money on it, that after you activate it and connect you will get no data throughput. This is how VM disables it. They kill your data connection when the tether is turned on.

Nitty gritty is they are changing data profiles in the framework. So you don't use your normal everyday data profile. They switch it to a diff one and check for subscription. If you don't they kill data.

I never fully connected but when I tried with my optimus v it kept saying obtaining ip. I'll see what I can figure out

I am in the same boat. Using a 3rd party launcher shows the app and all the settings, but obtaining IP does nothing.. Wish we could guess what the subnet and gateway are suppose to be :/

I wonder if Virgin turned off some of the daemons, etc. in ICS to disable routing and internet sharing.

P.S. Great forum!

i tried the fattin hotspot toggle thing it turned my wifi off looked like was going to work then glitched out went blank and a few seconds later it came back and did not work

wait if you turn it off will they fix your data or does it stay like that forever?
I LIKE MY FACEBOOK!!

I dont even see an upgrade price for the one v to be a hotspot. Only for the Evo...

Do you think rooting into the phone could help? Maybe "fix" what Virgin did to the phone? I wonder if third party root required apps would work, of if Virgin crippled part of the OS to make that not work either.

I know a full custom OS would work, but it can be a pain dealing with it. Getting a different rom is no issue, just fixing all the proxy settings, apn settings, etc.

Any ideas?

No. Third party works. There are a few ROMs on xda. My Cm9/10 has working tether

The Play Store says that FoxFi isn't available for the HTC One V -- it won't let me install it.

Really? That is odd, since I have it installed on my unrooted One V.

I have tethered my tablet (with PDANet Tablet on the tab) via bluetooth before - it works. Doesn't work with wifi hotspot, though. But bluetooth does work.

EDIT: It seems Sprint (and VM) had it removed from the Play Store, but you can download the app at FoxFi Installer (hit this link on your phone...).

it doesn't make the one v a hotspot?

No, at least not my unrooted One V. You can turn the hotspot on and it shows as throwing out wifi, but try to connect to it and you can't get a connection. Maybe you can root it and change that, I don't know.

As I said though, bluetooth tethering does work with Foxfi. It is slower than wifi and you won't be able to stream video or anything but you can surf just fine.

hey don't lose heart .. i just bought a new htc one v and PdaNet (FoxFi, same thing) works GREAT but only with Bluetooth.

i can confirm that .. just bought an htc one v (not rooted) and got PdaNet/FoxFi yesteday .. bluetooth works fine .. current record time without an interruption is 1 hour, 5 minutes .. it boots me off a lot though, trying to find out why.

Also, my laptop gets the strongest (most UN-interupted) bluetooth tethering connection from my htc one v when my htc's settings is set to wi-fi (feeding off my home's wireless connection), in contrast to the setting set to 'mobile network' (my virgin mobile connection) .. WORLD'S OF DIFFERENCE .. at least when tethering from HOME.

to further comment on my being 'booted off a lot' > i meant that's when my cell is set to 'mobile network' (virgin's connection), but when set on 'wi-fi' (from my home's wireless) i get virtually uninterrupted tethering. and youtube works ok as well. moral of the story .. get a strong signal on your cell and mess around a lot with settings and locations.
