wierd issue with the facebook app

Ever since I had my first phone (htc) ive been able to get every notifcation from facebook (likes, comments, tags, etc.) in the status bar, apart from messages/inbox. These bave been ticked in settings. Yet my mate had the exact same phone as me and he got facebook chat notifications on the status bar.. Is there something to do with my account? The Same things happens on my samsung galaxy s2.

Download the Facebook messenger app from the play store, set it up and then the notifications appear in the bar.
