Help WIERD problems transferring music files

I've had a Zune Player (hey, don't laugh <s>) for 20 years but thought i'd get current - like, catch up within 5 years anyway. So I've been trying for 3 months to troubleshoot transfer of all my music from computer to android phone (HTC One M8).
I've tried copying directly to MicroSD card and inserting that. I've tried plugging the phone into the puter via USB and using the file transfer tool that comes up (Win 10); that method offers to decode or recode what isn't in .mp3 format (i have some songs in .m4a and .wma).

The Music Library LOOKS like it's all copied, but halfway through the folders (artists) are all blank. No albums, no music. Then I can't do anything with the blank folders - they won't delete, for ex. So i re-format and try something new. The ones before the first failure play OK on the phone, using the Google Player. (I'm open to ideas for a more effective player - and ANY other ideas anyone has !))

It looks like the glitch happens after the transfer gets to the first .m4a song it came to, so i skipped that one - removed it from the copy list. Still no good. Then I took out everything that wasn't .mp3 and converted them to .mp3, using Roxio Creator 10. The converted songs all play fine on computer, but don't transfer to SD card for cr-- ... i mean, aren't any good. Even the filenames of the converted songs are gibberish when they get to the SD card.

I'm pretty geeky - built my last two computers - but apparently i don't know anything about android and I am Totally Stuck. I've googled the problem to death and haven't found anyone reporting a problem that sounds very much like this, or any solution that's helped.

I love learning, and will try anything you can think to do.

Thx very much in advance for trying to help, and for your time and experience.

What you're describing sounds like all the symptoms of a counterfeit micro-SD card, i.e. data corruption. Suggest you check it with SD Insight, to verify the integrity. If it states "invalid" or "unknown" that's very probably a fake, and it won't work.

Where did you buy it?

As for playing WMA files on Android, provided they're not protected with nasty DRM, you might have to use a third-party player rather than using the stock player, as Android usually doesn't natively support Windows Media, due to Microsoft software patents and licensing. M4A no problem, provided there's no DRM.

The problem has happened with two.mSD cards. I've bought a few, over time, and don't know where/ when i got them. Fact is, they both might be bogus.
Just ran SD Insight which said both cards are Invalid.
TY !!!! -- Good call !! Time to buy Real mSD cards !!

thx too for the info on what android will and won't play. The music's all genuinely mine with no DRM issues. Is there a player or two that gets positive mention in these forums ? Or is there a forum here i can check for that myself ? (new and don't know my way around ... )

I use VLC Media player. It can play almost all formats that you may have including WMA. It also has an equaliser, no ads, completely free. And it also plays videos, not only music....
