Wifi/3G toggle / 100mb data

Lurker
Gt myself a smartphone (Sony Xperia U), and needless to say I'm having several teething problems.

Firstly, how can I set it so I switch between 3G and Known Wifi connections automatically? I know iPhones and iPads do this automatically, but does android?

Also, I've only gone for 100mb Internet. This is because I like to be disconnected when I'm out and about, and the only thing I want to use it for is push email. I was told by several people in shops that of course this is no problem (it's a student/work email so I'm not getting large emails or anything). However, when I switch on Date Roaming it warns me that "charges may apply and it's best to switch off when finished using it" and this freaked me out. But surely I always need it on to receive push email? (I think being updated every half an hour).

Thanks for any help

Hi Karina, and welcome to AF :)

With my phone, when it connects to WiFi this takes precedence over 3G, and it will switch to 3G when it disconnects from the WiFi.

Roaming means using a network other than your home one, which usually means when travelling abroad. So similarly Data Roaming means using data when one a different network. This is usually a rip off, so I keep data roaming disabled, but am able to use data just fine on my own network (I also disable data completely when travelling, but leaving that setting "off" is a precaution in case I forget).

Thank you very much for your reply Hadron :)

Ahh yes, I see what you mean by Data Roaming now. I have a widget on my screen which has wi-FI, Bluetooth, data, roaming etc. And roaming has a little world in the picture. So, I just need to have Data on? I see it now in the widget, because nothing has been working for me when I switch off the wi-FI. I'm just worried since I only have 100mb. But even if I have it on all the time, it will only use up my mb when checking for email (which is hardly anything) and if I start watching movies and stuff (which of course I'm not doing anyway). Is this right?

It will also use data for other stuff, like syncing and checking for calendar updates, if you have Facebook or other social media apps it will ping every now and then. 100mb data is too little by today's standards. Most phones use up 10-30mb a day without much interaction. I'd rather suggest you turn off data unless you need it.

How is that possible? I don't have anything else on my phone, all I have is my email. The only reason I got the phone and the contract is because I want email pushed to my phone and if I can't do that then I'm going to cancel it (and I need to figure it out ASAP). If its checking every half an hour, and I may only get small emails through, how can I possibly use 30mb a day?
