WiFi acting odd

Gideoneer

I have WiFi set to turn off when the screen turns off (default action).

But looking at the native battery app, it shows the screen turning off now and then, but the WiFi is on almost all the time. The blue bar has only a couple of small breaks for WiFi during the past 6 hours.

Now what's weird is that I think WiFi IS off. Because when the screen is off, I can't ping the phone from my PC. Also after turning the screen on, I see the little 3G icon, and it disappears, and then appears the WiFi icon.

So how can you explain the WiFi bar being almost always on in the battery usage app?

Wifi is on at all times, it will not be connected or using the battery when the screen is off it is in a sleep state that is why it will connect so fast when you turn the screen on compared to if you toggle it off and on.

If the phone is not already connected to a WiFi and the phone screen is off (so WiFi is supposed to be sleeping), does it still look for a connection? (while screen is off I mean).

Also how often does it look for a connection? Is it every few seconds or every few minutes?

BTW it's not true that WiFi is ALWAYS on. For example now the blue bar for WiFi in the native battery bar has lots of breaks more or less corresponding to how often I turned off the screen.

So does anyone know why sometimes it does fully shut off and other times it stays on for almost the entire time?

My theory is that maybe it keeps WiFi on if your phone (hence 3G) signal is weak (<2 bars). But haven't had the phone long enough to really know
