WIFI Anywhere....

also...i like how you are talking about legality of things when half of the forum is dedicated to rooting phones, and you bluntly indicate that you have a rooted phone yourself, double edged sword there.

Rooting your phone is not illegal:

iPhone jailbreak and Android root now legal, exempt from DMCA

It does invalidate the warranty for most phones though.

Also, violating your contract is not illegal. It's a breach of contract. The police aren't going to come arrest you, but Verizon could cancel your service without warning if they find out you are doing it (not sure how they would know, but anyway...) and/or they could charge you for the extra fee and possibly sue you if you didn't pay.

I am sorry, it was early in the morning for me when i made that post.
that's what I mean ...it voids your warranty.
Thats where you are wrong, i've contacted several friends who work with verizon and they have no way of telling it, and they cannot cancel your service....they can in a way try "pushing" you to pay for their service but they cannot, if you want further research, look on droidforums.net, app section, same time as this, several high powered people did reviews of it, in addition newspapers such as washington post, and several books mention it.
but your entitled to your own thoughts to some extent...

lol at all the confusion. Basically this and wireless tether and others just let you use your data connection on your phone as your laptop's internet connection. Basically a modem. I have used pdanet on windows mobile and blackberry and have not paid for tethering through Verizon. You just have to be careful of your usage. You would be taking a huge risk streaming video or something while using this without the appropriate data plan. Verizon won't notice if you use it occasionally to lightly browse or check emails, but when you rack up lots of usage, they will catch on and believe me you will get a HEFTY BILL.

with my verizon plan ( and other ones on verizon) you pay 20 dollars a month for smart phone use, with that though you get UNLIMITED data plan, i am not saying try running a minecraft server, but on droidforums some even played battlefield 2 using pdanet, to some extent you can easily use "innocent till proven guilty"...meaning i dont think verizon will put black vans outside your house, but yeah use it wisely, and if you can run everything through proxy, and redirect proxy to china or something if you are that scared :p

Yeah I pay the 20 too, not the extra 15 or 20 for tethering. A buddy got charged 300 something bucks because they found out he was using this. He was streaming movies on the go a lot, though. So that's why I was saying, just be careful of your usage because they catch people quite often who use it too much heh.

i see...someone in verizon maybe had a bad day and wanted to let out frustration on somebody heh.
but yeah use it, but use it caution, no HD porn people :p.
but i will mostly use it to access information when i am traveling and cant access wifi spot....keep in mind, tethering speed will never be as fast as your average internet connection, because it was designed for a phone (not huge things).
hopefully this helps as well.

easyether is not better in many ways :)....but whatever works for you heh.
and it should have transferred your license, you should of contacted them about it if it didnt.

i am not sure what it being new or not has to do with anything by the way, if i find a good app that some people have not known about that was released on day 1 of android platform, i will share it, whats wrong with that :)
id be happy to hear your reasons why easytether isnt better.

and i tried to find the email from the dev of pdanet where he specifically tells me that a license cannot be transferred from one platform to another. back when i had my BB9630 it was a pain in the ass to get them to transfer my license from one blackberry pin to another. several emails and 3 weeks in fact. so aside from my satisfaction with another app that does just what i need from it i also have an issue with th dev support, i will say that while i did have pdanet it was an excellent app.

Why use any of these? Root your phone and use Barnacle or Wireless Tether completely free (Uses standard Data)

Because PDANet allows you to get a slightly faster wired speed.

And, it still falls under your normal data usage. It is however (As is Barnacle or Wireless Tether) most likely in violation of your contract.
