So I have never used Google hangouts before and recently read a article on CNET regarding wifi calling and they list hangouts as one of the apps that uses the WiFi to make calls. Can any elaborate on this for me and suggest ? I live in a area that has poor cell tower coverage but I have Xfinity as my WiFi provider and its excellent. I am on AT&T have a Nexus 6. Also should note I use a microcell tower as well but its not very reliable still drop calls...

A lot of People like Hangouts but personally I hate it so I don't have in installed any more. However, I can tell you that calls through What's App work great! We use them all the time to talk with my family in the States and I totally recommend it!!

OK. WhatsApp I believe that was the app they talked about on the Google io 2015 .
I want to utilize my WiFi over data signal . so either of those apps will do that?

If Free calls over WiFi to ANY US number is what you need, then Hangouts is your best choice. Viber, Skype charge you unless they (who you are calling) ALSO have the app. Whatsapp, you have to have the other party have it as well or it won't work.

My son who lives in Georgia, works in Ohio, and is employed by a German company ( how's that for being involved? )
is required by that company to only use encrypted communications apps on their cellphone.

What's App does that, so I installed it on my phone. When I need to message him, I have to use What's App.

Do I need a Google voice number to use hangouts to get the benefits of using WiFi instead of carrier tower? According to this article I do http://www.reviewtechnica.com/2014/11/google-hangouts-free-wifi-calls.html?m=1
Yes, a Google Voice number is required to use WiFi Calling to any US number, and getting one is free, otherwise if you dont, it will be a program like Whatsapp where the other person has to have it as well. With a Google number you can also text anyone in the US, and a great added feature is you can use your computer to text back, kinda like Apple Messenger / FaceTime

WhatsApp can u make calls via WiFi. Hangouts wants me to use another number thru Google voice
With Whatsapp you can ONLY make calls to other people who have Whatsapp. With Google voice you can make WiFi call to ANY US number whether they have the app or not.

OK. So I need to get a Google voice number to use hangouts. But still use my carrier number. I am kinda of confused now... Sorry

I have used Hangouts, Groove IP, Talkatone for wifi calling. They all seem to work pretty well. I have Xfinity business class internet and like you said it's fast and works well.

What I did is ported my number to Google Voice and that's all I use now. I can even use my computer to text and call
I don't recommend porting your number to Google Voice. Most users will have more and better options by using GV as a second number.

You will need a GV number, Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer to make WiFi calls. Icetwig is correct. Hangouts will let you call anyone, including landlines, etc. Whatsapp is Whatsapp-to-Whatsapp only.

I am sorry lost again... So by getting a Google voice number does that mean the people who want to call me have to use that number and when I call them their call ID will see the Google number not my at&t number?? Yeah just want be able to make calls via WiFi turned out to be more confusing. Lol

I use it as my primary number and I am not dependant to a provider, I can use my computer to text or make phone calls and I can use my cell phone as well. It may not work for others but for me it works out great.

Yes, I have an AT&T line with an AT&T number of course, but I have not used that number at all, and strictly use my Google Number. It works great for me, it all depends on what you want.

Another option is to move to T-MOBILE and have the pay your early termination fees. T-MOBILE phones have built-in WiFi Calling without the need for extra programs. So that's another option.
