Help wifi doesn't connect (originally same issue with Win7)

Really not sure how to properly describe this issue succinctly, so forgive the broad thread title.

I just moved cities and I'm crashing with a friend and his roommate for a couple of weeks. The roommate's router initially gave me serious issues connecting my Windows 7 laptop (something about settings not being compatible with the settings on this computer, despite the password and all other settings were fine). Occasionally the taskbar icon on Win7 shows an X through the wifi connection, even though I can still use the internet.

My phone, however, hasn't been able to connect to wifi at all. It never gets past "connecting..." and then reverts to "Remembered".

What can I do to resolve this? I've just rooted the phone and flashed Sleipnir, but it didn't work with stock, rooted stock and now Sleipnir. Any good diagnostic tests?

The wifi works fine with my friend's Mac and his roommate's iPad, though I haven't asked about their iPhone and Samsung android phone's (neither are technologically inclined). I'd rather not mess with the router if at all possible.

I find that with a lot of devices connecting and disconnecting from a router, that it occasionally gets confused and tries assigning an invalid ip to the phone... A quick reset of the router by unplugging it for 30sec or so usually is all it takes to fix it. You can do it late at night or another time that nobody is using it so it doesn't interfere with anyone.

The only other thing I could think, is the protection he is using on the router.
It could be that you are setup for WAP, and he's using another form.
