Root Wifi fix with no app?

Loota

Android Enthusiast
So.. I found that setdns' constant need for su due to the way it sets the dns was unwieldy.. atleast if its only needed for wifi which is what I was using it for as a workaround for the 2.3.6 wifi issue.

Enter stage right the 20-dns.conf file. Copy the one I uploaded below and replace the one found in /system/etc/dchpcd/dhcpcd-hooks/ and reboot your phone. Of course as with all files in your phones system storage please use an app capable of root exploring please set your permissions to R/W.

This has been tested on my phone only. Before importing this to your phone please make a nandroid backup (cwm backup). Please post results on whether this worked for you so that others will know :-).

This is a simple mod that sets your wifi only dns server to open dns. It is accomplished by editing the conf file listed above and adding two lines that set the dns to open dns.

My requests:

If anyone is willing and able to make a cwm flashable zip with this and can confirm it is working please feel free to post it here to make it easier for someone else to install :-P

Any devs wishing to use this in their own rom please feel free to do so. I will be adding it to my own and uploading a tweaked bear necessities MK2 soon.. when I get access to wifi.

Will this mod allow us to still have access to youtube? That was the issue with set dns before. Alwsays had to switch back to google dns if I wanted to use youtube app

On a related note, I am one of the lucky few who never had problems with wifi after the
update. Is there a file or set of files that I could copy from my phone that would help?

I don't know... I've never had an issue with youtube using opendns.. if you would like I can make a file with google dns instead of opendns that you could use.. really it seems like the issue is the stock dns is the problem which is not google dns either. What this file does is it changes your dns server for wifi only and it will stay that way... not sure if using set dns with it will affect it in some weird way or in some way compliment it.

The issue I started having with set dns was it would always be asking for su permission. So if I called someone, got disconnected and tried to recall them, it would slooooooow down my phone app (even the stock one) and cause me great frustration so here is an alternative.

I don't know for sure xaelith, IMHO those lucky few with no issues are using routers that do not cause issues with whatever the phone is trying to do. Wifi would not work anywhere except where someone had verizon fios for me. It worked on all verizon fios routers but not cablevision which is the other big name in internet around here.

Interesting. If the router or router settings are the true culprit, then I guess I just lucked out that both my home router and the one at work don't give me issues.

Anyway, let me know if there's anything I can do to help out. I plan on rooting my ultra this weekend or sometime soon anyway, and would be more than willing to create a nandroid backup of my phone (or whatever else is needed) and upload it here.

I've had to deal with buggy hardware before, and understand how completely irritating it can be to have something not work the way it's supposed to.

I used setdns. And set to open and experienced the YouTube problems, but when I switched back to Google DNS, my wifi works with no problems. I use netqin mobile booster aka android booster set to disable wifi on optimize and when I turn wifi back on with the one click button on the booster widget, it turns on with no problems. Don't know if this helps any one, but there it is.
