If you're referring to sharing files between your PC and your Android device, I use ES file explorer.

Do I need to install anything on my pc, or just enable file sharing?

Just enable file sharing and make sure your firewall allows the correct tcp port.
No, most file managers can access network shares without needing a desktop component. Some may require an add-on but I don't recall which ones. I've used Astro for this.
