Wifi-only device? Opinions?

Well, here's my situation. A family member wants to use a device to back up his Outlook (Calender, Contacts, ect.), he had previously used what he called a "tablet" and what I took to understand as just a cheap Palm knockoff.

After leaving that device in some clothing during the wash and losing everything he had on it he wants a device he can use to backup/sync his Outlook on his Wifi or even through USB.

I was thinking he could just buy a used G1, then use it as a Wifi-only PDA type device, does this sound like a decent idea? I assume there are apps out there for Outlook syncing but I haven't looked yet.

Any insight would really be appreciated! :)

He could use an android phone for wifi only and I believe he could even make it so all contacts are synced with the google account. I don't know about outlook though, as I don't use it except for at work.
