Wifi-only Vibrant, Can I update it?

Hello all!

So my iPod kicked the bucket (because it went through a full cycle of washer and dryer) and I decided that with all the Apple lawsuit nonsense I am boycotting Apple.

So my quest for a new MP3 player landed me with the brilliant idea of buying the best used android phone I could afford to use as a PMP. I landed a Samsung Vibrant for Tmo for $100 tonight.

The phone was rooted by the previous owner, and even though he wiped it The phone was up and running when he handed it to me.

It says it is running 2.1-update1. I thought these phones were updated to 2.2 a while back? When I tap system update, I get the no-sim error. Of course I do, theres no SIM in it.

What I want to know is this: Can I update this phone to 2.2 or 2.3 (whatever is most recent) without getting a functional Tmobile SIM that has a data plan? I plan to use the Vibrant for 3d games, and I know 2.2 and 2.3 updates increased 3d performance.

Anyone with knowledge of these things willing to offer an answer? Thanks!

(P.S. time to scour the market for the best mp3 player app! Recommendations? ^_~)

not sure if you can but you can always give it a shot. download kies mini and try updating the phone via it.
if it comes to the mp3 player than PowerAMP is one of the best i think but its a paid app so not sure if you can buy it without a sim card

You can go get a pre-paid sim from t-mobile for $10. Once you activate the sim, you will have approx. $3 of pre-paid credit on the phone. The unlimited 24hr web day pass is $1.49. I think that would be the cheapest and easiest thing to do. And you can always get a prepaid plan too. I use my vibrant on wifi and have unlimited texts for $15 a month. Usually I just put $20 credit on my phone every month so I can use a daypass for web when needed. Hope this helps!

Just got a used one for $100 and upgraded to 2.2 via Kies mini without a sim. Yes, it should let you upgrade. The only think I'm not sure about that is your phone is rooted. Will Kies mini upgrade rooted phone?
