Help wifi/phone signal VERY low

Got a Samsung Admire r720 phone and noticed I have to be within 20 feet a a wifi source to get even a bare signal. So I activated it. I couldn't receive/make calls after activation and MetroPCS couldn't help me so I deactivated it. Downloaded many apps to boost signal and they didn't work either. Every other device connects beautifully to the wifi router, I know my password, it picks up the wifi hotspot (if I am really close to it) but nowhere else. Is this a hardware issue with the antennae, or something I am overlooking?, any ideas??

Have you changed any settings on your phone recently?
 
You will probably find that the Admire is not as sensitive to a signal as other phones. For example, my first Android was a Huawei M835 (also on Metro). At home, I would get full bars from the network with that phone everywhere in the house and also on WiFi. With the Admire, if I am upstairs (top floor), it will display full bars but if downstairs, it will fluctuate between 1 and 2 bars.

WiFi will display a weak signal upstairs, but if downstairs (same floor as router location), it will be stronger and displays full WiFi signal if the phone is right next to the router.

Out of all the phones I've used over the years, the brand I've seen displaying the best signal, is LG.
