Help Wifi speed

OverByter

Resident Slide Rule Guru
In the last week or so I've noticed that if I put the phone in my dock or connect the charger my Wifi speed increases substantially, any idea why and is there anything that I can do to improve the speed when using the battery?

Hmm. That is interesting. My phone has a substantial increase in wifi speed while its plugged in too. We have 50mbps at our house for internet, And when its not plugged in i get about 20 average... With it plugged in im getting about 42 average. I ran 5 consecutive tests with each to make sure it wasnt just a fluke thing.

Makes no sense to me.

I noticed there was a loss in speed a while ago, And the phone wasnt handling the full potential of what we have... But I didnt know plugging it into a charger would make a difference.

Edit: I just double checked to make sure my wifi in settings isnt using the "power saver" mode, And its in "performance mode". Its labed as "wifi optimization" on PACman under advanced wifi settings.

Yeah, this one has me totally stumped, the only thing that would make sense would be if it was a problem with my phone, but your experience throws that out of the window.

Is your phone connected to your router using wireless G or N? can you try to put it on one or the other to see if it makes a difference? I cant try right now. Everyone will flip out on me for rebootin the router. :p

Everyone here is using 2.4 Ghz wireless N, already used Wifi overview to set the router to an unused channel. When using the program I can see the connection speed drop after unplugging the phone, is the Wifi radio struggling for power? I don't understand why, noticed it purely by accident, during a download I dropped it on the dock and watched my download speed shoot up greatly.

This phone has built in B/G/N yes, But not everyone is actually using the N band. Some people may have a router that is only a a/b/g router and not a/b/g/n router. Thats why I was curious if it was related to having the router only pushing out G or only N.

Most routers you can select G or N or G+N. Thats why I was curious what you were on, and if it made a difference setting it to only G or only N.

The 2 phones, 1 computer and 1 tablet are all connected by wireless N, 1 older laptop is connected through wireless G, so the router is setup for 2.4 Ghz wireless g/n so I can't really change any settings except for channel without upsetting other family members. If I switch my phone to

Edit: after flashing a new rom I just noticed that the use the best Wifi performance wasn't checked, I'll do some testing in the morning but I have a feeling that it puts the Wifi radio into a low power state while on internal power unless checked.

This could be due to the voltage, being plugged in to a wall outlet the WiFi radio is operating at max. When on battery the phone is in somewhat a power management state not using the full capacity of the WiFi even when you have the "best WiFi performance" checked. This is also the case with the 4G WiMax radio, when unplugged from my phone my WiMax signal is "fair" when plugged in to the wall outlet the signal bumps to "good." Think of being plugged into the wall outlet as a amplifier.
