Root Wifi Tether without Root solution?

Well, it's also me just asking if anyone else has had experience with this one.

FoxFi:

I just found out about it a couple days ago, and I know that many people who root their phones do so to obtain a free wifi tether ability, so I'm thinking this could be a decent solution for many (at least till it's either removed from the market or Verizon drops us all for using it)...

I'm running 2.3.4 with system build .621 on my Droid X, and have used FoxFi here for the past two days with my tablet and it works great. It doesn't have any "fancy" features like some Wifi apps I've seen; It's pretty much "Set your Network Name, set your password, turn it on" and that's it. You can't see who's connected or control IP addresses or anything. Took me awhile to realize that to see bandwidth usage it's hidden up in the corner...

Just wanted to post about this for anyone wanting to do the Wifi tethering, and if anyone has heard anything about Verizon's TOS on this.

When I first saw this a few days ago I immediately downloaded it and backed up the app with ES File Explorer - thinking it might soon disappear from Google Play (I hate that name).

yeah i suspect it will be removed from the android market(i dont call it google play) just because it violates carrier TOS, and google seems to be on board with not allowing that to happen

Open Garden just released a new non-root application that allows you to share your internet among all your devices. It's not technically tethering... it's based around the idea of a p2p mesh made of devices sharing bandwidth. (Brought to you by two bitTorrent developers, actually)

It's nothing new. Similar sized wifi and wireless mice adapters have been common for some time. I like the size because you can leave them plugged into your laptop and throw it in a case without having to remember to unplug them.

Works great. Posting from laptop tethered to it right now. I'm rooted but I guess that isn't even required. After several years of needing to root to use the hotspot and then the available apps either not working or being so buggy that you have to reboot your phone after each use pretty much made me go back to wired tether. Can't wait to try it with an ipad.
