Help Wifi tethering problem

Mentaal

Lurker
Hi guys,i am new to this forum and to the android scene. I recently bought a samsung galaxy mini and was hoping to use the wifi tethering facility it offers. When I try to use it the androidap hotspot becomes visible and I can associate my laptop with it and can communicate with which I verified by pinging it. I am assigned an ip address and dns server and gateway are all ok.however I cannot access the net from my laptop.there is no problem with my laptop as I've tried the same thing with my friends nexus one without problem. There doesn't appear to be any options for the hotspot save for name and security options which I have left open.i have also also tried tethering w item usb which again sets up fine but doesn't work.its a brand new phone and I am at a loss for how to approach this problem.the carrier I am using is the same as my friends works and the internet also works on my phone which I am using to send this. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Yeah mate the prob you are having is probably just firewall, you need to allow the new network into one of the default groups, (Home, Work, Public) set it has home, leave the AP running on your phone, then disable your wifi on your laptop (wifi hard switch) then enable it, this will refresh your connection and reconnect back to your phone AP, a window should pop up asking to assign to a group. Assuming you are using Vista or 7.

It might not be the firewall.

I had same problem. But it was my phone. Try this :

1. Turn off your mobile AP.

2. Open your keypad and type ir this : *#*#526#*#*

3. Wait for it to say : Driver loaded successfully. Or something like that.

4.Turn on the mobile AP. And try connecting then. If the problem appears again, type in that code again .

This worked very well for me. Hope it helps you.

Hey guys, thanks for getting back to me on this. Well I know for a fact that its not a firewall problem as I have tried it on a windows and linux pc. The linux pc does not have a firewall and additionally I tried the exact same thing with a friends phone without a problem.

I tried your suggestion Netas3k and it came up with somthing about wlan engineering mode or some such but alas to no avail. I am reluctant to return the phone to meteor for repair because its brand new and I dont want to be waiting weeks for it to come back to me. Additionally I am of the mind that its just a software problem on the phone as obviously the wifi and wireless internet aspects of the phone work just fine.

Thanks for the suggestion all the same and as a matter of curiosity, is there a list of related codes to make the phone do all sorts of weird and wonderful things? Do you think its worth trying to update the phone to gingerbread to resolve the problem? One those lines, is gingerbread officially available for the phone yet? (I reside in Ireland)

Thanks for the help so far!

I don't think it's your phone mate, but i could be wrong, i also had initial problems when i first tried tethering, but i got it working.

Windows is very bad at handling wifi so give this program a try Overview excellent wifi manager, it will allow you to select a specific wifi device elimination lots of possible windows issues.

You should try our phone internet with wifi off and see if that works, then try wifi internet on your phone for your phone, then try it for windows.

If all fails try it with a different computer, if possibly not in the same area...

If your still falling on your face :D and i know that hurts, maybe a hard reset is worth a shot
