wifi w/o verizon service?

Hi guys, I have a question. If I were to deactivate my incredible with verizon, would I be able to use the wifi like an Itouch. I love the incredible, but I am trying to cut corners. Anyone know if that would still connect at free wifi sites like starbucks etc. Thanks in advance. John

Yeah it will work on wifi but if you got yours subsidized on contract you will have to pay an ETF for canceling your service.

Ctc I am considering reverting to a talk/text phone to lower my bill and staying in my contract. If I can do wifi on incredible i'll downsize and save $$$. thanks. john

Not a bad alternative to save money.. you can still root and run roms, just cant make calls. you can use wifi, use it as a music player, even use the market i think with wifi.

my brother uses his eris as an iTouch. he can use apps, and everything else, just cant make calls.

it's the same as toggling your 3G off and using your home wifi (sans phone calls)

Got a friend doing this - and with skype, can use it as a phone when at home or other wifi nearby

I spoke to a Verizon Rep and he said l could not wifi w/o data pkg. Did he fib or is he dumb.

My plan is to return to my last phone talk/text. From $126 down to $90 or less.
I will go to Verizon and change my plan. John

Look 1 message up to see that he 'fibbed'

Note that my friend has no service at all on the phone, uses it on wifi only and has a dumb phone for verizon cell service

If you got the phone at a subsidized price, you will have to pay the ETF to drop the data plan.

My understanding from the Verizon Rep and Verizon forums that if I reactivate an old cell phone that doesn't support data I won't be penalized. I will go to Verizon store with old cell and see where I stand. I will post results. Thanks to all. John

If you got the phone for a discounted price for signing a contract then you are required to have at least the minimum data package ($15/month for 150 MB) if you have the Incredible activated.

If you switch to an older phone, then you would be able to just have talk/text as long as you use a phone that doesn't require a data pak. You could switch to this phone without being charged an ETF.
