how do i get my wifi not to automatically search for networks in the area

Turn it off when not using it. It's the only way to be sure.

If it's notifications which annoy you you can tell it not to notify you when open networks are found (Settings > WiFi > Advanced). But if WiFi is on it will scan - if it didn't it wouldn't recognise when you came in range of your home WiFi either, so if you want to completely stop it scanning you may as well just turn it off anyway.

You can also look in Settings > WiFi > Advanced to find options to reduce power usage if that's the concern (and there's one to let it scan even when WiFi is off, which you certainly want to turn off by the sound of it - I think that's for the benefit of Google's location service, and I certainly don't allow it).
