Root Wildfire S CDMA, CWM hangs on backup

I'm trying to work on a phone for a friend. It's an HTC Wildfire S, Virgin Mobile.

I flashed CWM which required a fix for the "2012 version". CWM now boots, but I can't seem to back up the rom before I proceed to flashing, and I"m afraid to flash without doing that.

It loads CWM Recovery 5.0.2.8. When I select backup, it says
SD Card space free: whatever size
Backing up boot image...
Backing up recovery image...
Backing up system...


And then it hangs on a random file. It never gets past halfway and sometimes not even close to that far. The phone works just fine otherwise so I really don't know what's wrong with it.

I've let it sit for half an hour and nothing proceeds.
