Help wildfire S help required

Hi I require help for my friend who has the wildfireS like me. She has know wifi at home so how can she keep her android updated with out using all her data plan.
please can you make it easy so I can help her, is it safe to do updates when your in tesco that offers free wifi etc

I didn't know tesco did free WiFi!

If that's all she's doing, yes but connecting to open/unsecured networks on a regular basis isn't really recommended.
