Will Android 2.3 Allow Downloading Apps to SD?

Is 2.3 expected to allow us to download apps to the sd card instead of internal memory? It is very annoying to have to constantly delete apps to put on new ones.

That feature came with Froyo (2.2), but the developer of the app has to enable on their end as well. There are plenty of devs that have done this.

You can already do that with 2.2 as long as the developer allows it.

If you want to move more apps to the SD card, you'll need to have the Android SDK installed. How-To Install Android SDK On Windows, Mac and Linux

Then on your phone go to settings>applications>development and enable USB Debugging. Plug your phone into the PC using the USB cable.

open a command prompt on your PC (start>run type "cmd" press ENTER)

Change directory to the android-sdk-windows\tools folder

At the prompt type
Code:
adb devices
and you should see your phone listed as a serial number.

type
Code:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2

Done.

Now the default location to install apps is the SD card. And, some apps that you couldn't move to the SD card will now be able to be moved. Keep in mind Widgets and services should always be installed to the phone and not the SD card, so if you follow the steps above and you install a widget afterwards, you will need to go to settings>applications>manage applications and manually move it to the phone. If you want to set the default install location back to the phone, you simply repeat the process but use
Code:
adb shell setInstallLocation 0

Hi,

followed the instructions, but after I confirmed adb shell setInstallLocation 2, nothing happened - no message confirming anything. Then I tried downloading a really big app (20MB). I had only 15MB free space on my internal memory but SD card had plenty of free space. But, I got "Not enough space to install this app" message. (its Abbyy Business Card Reader Lite)

Any help please?

There would be no confirmation message from a shell command. Only an error message if it didn't work.

15MB free is not much at all. To install a 20MB app you should have I'd guess at least twice that for it to succeed. I believe the app must be downloaded to a temporary location on the phone's internal memory before being moved to the install location (sd card in this case.)

You should also know that the app may be set to install only to the phone's internal memory, even if the default is set to the sd card. Android has specific rules for where it installs apps. If the app has a specified location, that takes priority. If it is not specified in the app, then the default install location is used. Android has 3 identifiers for app storage location:

0 = Internal
1 = Auto
2 = External (sd card)

If 0 is set in the app, then it can only be installed on the internal storage regardless of the default install location. Widgets, services and apps that periodically poll need to be in the internal storage to run correctly.

Similarly the phone itself can have a default install location set so if the app is set to 1 (Auto) then it will direct the app where to be installed. The only thing you must remember is that 1 is not an option for a phones default location. If the app were set to Auto location and the phone was to, it wouldn't know what the default was.

You may find now that by setting the default install location to 2 you can now move more apps to the sd card that you couldn't before. If you go to menu>settings>applications>manage applications you can check which apps are able to be moved, paying close attention NOT to move widgets or polling apps.

Thanks for the reply.

So it would be clever to have at least 40MB of free internal space in order to download and temp-install large apps that then they would get moved to SD automatically. Is that correct?

just downloaded Do it Tomorrow app (1,5mb). It installed itself to the phone, not to SD. But in the option, I can move it to SD card.

So this is the case, when the app is set to install to the phone by default?

yes, and it should improve the overal performance of your phone as well.

Make sure adb.exe is located in your tools folder. I have heard of adb.exe not being included in the SDK. I also think they have changed the folder structure of the SDK. Look for adb.exe in platform-tools folder.

I downloaded and installed the Android SKD, as well as the Android 2.3.3 (API 10); my Nexus One is 2.3.6.

I can run adb, but adb devices doesn't show any phones. I didn set USB debugging to ON.

Any idea why I can't see the phone?

thanks,
...Rich

You may need to install the drivers for the phone.

Hi All,

In the new android kit version the adb path have been moved from tools to platform-tools as below
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools

go to the above mentioned path and run the command..
it works!!!

It doesnt matter where the files are located .
On Windows you need

adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll

to run adb .

Just copy those files from C:/..../platform-tools
to C:/users/abc/(or whatever your username is ) or c:\system folder and you can use adb on cmd anytime ;)(

On side note if you add the path of adb to your system path in your environment variables in advanced settings ,it also works :)
