Root Will I still get OTA upgrades?

Hello,

Apologies if this is an obvious or previously answered question, but here goes anyway.

I am a rooted (revoked) htc desire orange user and I have flashed what I believe to be an HTC stock rom = 2.10.405.2. Phone was rooted and then flashed to rid the terrible orange branding that comes with it.

In the software info of the phone it reads:

Android = 2.2
Software = 2.10.405.2

Will I still get OTA HTC updates running this rom and being rooted - or as my brother tells me, do I need to remove the root?
Cheers

Do NOT apply OTA updates to rooted phones.

You may receive the notifications of updates. You will then install them and you will screw up your phone ;)

Theres a rooting FAQ in my sig / the sticky for you to read.

Hope this helps. pelase feel free to ask more questions.

Thanks for the quick reply - I will sort the Rom issue over the weekend.
All I essentially wanted was the rom flashed, was never bothered about root. Is it worthwhile keeping, or should I just unrevoke back? I will read your guide - thanks

It depends if you need the root access.

Its good for backing up data and settings etc (which you can't do as well on non rooted).

But if you have no specific need for root, perhaps stock would suit you best?

I think stock would suit me best - so I guess final questions from me on thsi matter - apologies again if it is in your guide but:

Going back to stock - I need to unroot (using unrevoked?) - as that was how I rooted.

What do I need to do this? - will I need to downgrade to 2.1 and then let stock bring me back to 2.2 and accept OTA updates? If so - what do I need to flash to keep the rom orange free? ha ha - I hate the bloatware.

Thanks

I take it you have a gold card?

Best thing would be to get the latest Generic WWE RUU from shipped roms:

This RUU

Shipped ROMs

And run it from your PC with the phone connected (Goldcard in place)

Thing is though, it wipes ALL data

I didn't go through any process to specifically make a goldcard - unless the unrevoked method does it for you? Meaning my current sd card - has goldcard folder partitioned on it?

Im not wanting to go back to the stock orange rom, so if I use one of the generic roms from the shipped roms site you suggest - run it as an ruu through the exe process on my laptop - does that then revert the phone back to scratch - unrooted and no orange branding? And it means OTA now available from HTC?

Not too bothered about the data loss - I can get most things like messages and pictures back from wavesecure app.

****I am awaiting unlock code from HTC - Via Orange****

Yes, You will be unbranded stock, latest Update.

You will receive OTA updates in future (if there are any) but your SD card will NEED to be a goldcard (which unrevoked does not do) to both RUU and OTA

A gold card is an SD card with some extra code added to it to allow it to bypass the CID when flashing an RUU

If you flash an unbranded RUU (latest being 2.29.405.2) with a gold card in the phone you'll end up on a stock, unrooted HTC ROM which will get OTA updates as and when they're available from HTC. You will need your gold card to get these updates so it's best to make your normal day to day SD card a gold card and leave it in the Desire

Question - I am now able to pull the 2.29.405.5 system update OTA. I have run the generic RUU to take me out of root and I have the goldcard installed, but the update, when I go to install it after downloading OTA gives me the red excalmation mark indicating there is an issue.

There is obviously still a problem with me taking OTA????
I have absolutley no root access on the phone - advice please.
Thanks

I've never done an OTA update before but the RUU will have taken you back to stock, so the fact you were rooted shouldn't be an issue.

Can you re-download the OTA? Can you confirm your goldcard works? I assume it does if you used an unbranded RUU and you were originally branded

Yip, the goldcard def works, i used it to push through an ruu like you said at an earlier stage of my thread.

Just tried to re-download and run again and same error message when I try to install......dont really want to ruu the whole thing again....if no suggestions then ill just leave it and ruu if a new version gets released and that wont OTA.

Your not trying to install over a more recent version are you? That would be first guess. Second is different types of Rom: rru was branded or different area to the update, and thus won't install on top as it were...

I'm trying to install over the previous update, I have 405.2 installed just now and that was a non branded ruu to get me off root and away from an Orange Rom.

Just downloaded latest update and applied to SD root, tried to update in recovery, but still no joy.
It's weird that the update won't take, have HTC got smart with goldcards? Ha ha, non branded handset for me next time around.

As long as I get gingerbread and hopefully honeycomb, ill ruu those files if need be.

Out of all the numbers, you posted the least useful 2. Can only tell its unbranded. What's the rest?

That's the latest rom. You can't update it to the same version or an older version - only newer versions. Are you sure you got this OTA? That's really odd if so, as there are no newer versions.

Scratch that, there is a small minor bug fix that a few people are having issues with too.

Probably doesn't fix anything you'd notice anyway
