Will the defy be worth anything?

So, I was thinking, currently the Defy runs on Android 2.1, and no update to 2.2 has been confirmed here in the US, but they have confirmed that it will be available in Europe and some other places in Q2 2011. That got to me. By the time the defy receives 2.2 here in the US there will be phones running on Android 3.0, leaving the Defy to what? It won't really be a high end device (well it never really was compared to the big competitors, but you get what I mean). Is the Defy even worth having? Should i upgrade to a phone that will support 2.3 by Q2 2011, or stay with the Defy and take my chances?

the defy is of the hook! who cares about the android 3.0 or whatever, it is a high end phone ! after a year i will get the new version of it so does it really matters? not to me

Depends what you use it for. I've always had high end phones and moved to the Defy. No real drop in performance and I don't have to worry about dropping it when I'm out running and geocaching.

the problem with this phone is it did not get enough marketing and people underestimate it!! cause of that my touch phone is in the focus....

i've have mine since day 1 and it hasn't misfired yet.

i drive an 18 wheeler part time and go on numerous road trips with my wife besides.

i even bought my wife one after she told me she would never use anything but, a blackberry and now she loves her DEFY.

only thing i'm waiting to see is the new MOTOPAD if it's nearly as rugged as my DEFY is, i'm buying one.

remember after saturday motorola phones is it's own separate company and in order to make their mark they're goin' to really rock the market.

quit quibbling about 2.2 or 2.3.

MOTPOAD has 3.0.

yes i agree with you i use to have 2 plackberrys until i got the defy what a different the touchscreen is nice and responsive and effortless to navigate and a nice size screen easy to brows the web , i just discovered the google map navigation its awesome just ordered a holder for the windshield i have a garmin navi this thing is eat it alive soo much faster better looking , responsive, so far is a joy!

yeah...right...that's nice and all..but i DONT HAVE the motopad. (or well let me rephrase that since it's not even out yet: i'm NOT GOING TO GET the motopad so it could have 3.3 for all i care)

What about this phone is NOT high end?

Your not being sold some "super" processor.

Your being sold a phone that if you get caught in the rain, you don't have to worry and freak out over.

Your being sold a phone that compete's in terms of specs with the MAJORITY Of phone's out there.

The iphone processor is scaled down to 800 mhz, I don't see people knocking it as "low end"

It also has a 5 MP camera. (leave the "OH ITS PIXELS ARE BIGGER" to another debate!)

Samsung Galaxy S series is great with hummingbird and all.. but, its currently the "BEST" out.

So what? just because a phone doesn't beat the very top of the charts means its not "high end" these days or what?

The stupid thing is water resistant, benchmarks spectacularly and the only real difference between it and any other phone from a seriously objective 3rd party point of view is it wasn't hyped up like all the other phones.

I assure you, your going to have a problem with any phone you have.

All the problems with iphone 4 DO exist.

I'm in the UK, and bought my Defy just over 3 weeks ago.

I had initially been looking at the Desire and Samsung Galaxy, then the Desire HD. I was dead set on getting the Desire HD until I saw a post in the DHD forum about the Defy - I had never heard of the Defy before then.

In terms of high-end or low-end, I'd say the Defy sits alongside the Desire (which my brother has) in terms of spec and performance. The phone is well built, but is a lot cheaper in comparison.

The Defy may be behind as it's still on the Eclair, but it still is a brilliant phone and does everything I need, and more.

Are there particular features in Froyo or Gingerbread which are an absolute must for you? For me, I will not lose any sleep if Froyo never comes out for the Defy.

I'm happy to have the phone for duration of my 18 month contract, and will upgrade to a newer phone when the time comes - Android 2.4/3.0 phones would probably be out by then anyway - and I have read that they will specify minimum hardware specs.

The only thing I would like is a bigger screen, but for now, I am more than happy with my phone.

The DEFY, just like the Sony Ericsson X-series handsets that recently got 2.1 (and by that, isn't it 2.1.update 1?), seem to have some of the features from 2.2 anyway.

The DEFY has the mobile hotspot feature (maybe not the native one, but it works fine), and other menu settings that were first introduced on 2.2 - such as being able to adjust the time period before you need to enter a PIN/finger pattern. You can also set apps to auto update (but not install/copy to SD card). Still, with 2GB of internal memory for apps, I've only just exceeded 1GB and that's with a LOT of apps I've installed for fun.

As said above, the phone does everything you need - and it's fast. The hi-res screen looks great, not quite Retina Display but not far off. It's certainly hard to see the pixels, and those extra 54x480 pixels are good for browsing.

The camera isn't great, but it's fine in good light, and video is disappointing at just VGA resolution (but it isn't overly compressed and the results look pretty good on a PC/Mac/YouTube) and the biggest benefit, by far, is the fact it can be used in all weathers, the screen is rock solid and it actually looks a lot different to the usual plethora of slabs. Dare I say it but MotoBLUR even works well, giving you many of the features that HTC owners enjoy with Sense.

Oh, and the performance in the 3D/graphics department is excellent too - benchmarking very well, while having a 1,500mAh battery that means you'll never get caught short even if you're using it quite heavily. I've been in bed watching movies and using Tapatalk for forums, web browsing and Tweet Deck and even with all of this (including regular data access), if I consume more than 10% of battery in an hour then I'd be wondering what's gone wrong! (There's also the excellent battery manager that can be made to save even more juice if needed).

Can you guess that I'm quite a big fan? And I've got a Nexus S and Desire HD on my desk at the moment too - but they're not the handsets I'm using day to day.
