Will UK based android apps work in Canada?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering whether anyone could help me with an andriod related problem!

I have just moved to Canada from the UK to drive highway trucks (lorrys back in the UK) and am lookingat getting a smart phone. Mainly for the maps (dont want to get lost in a big rig!) and a UK based radio app (absolute radio) because I do really miss that station! I know the absolute radio itunes app works here in canada but I really would prefer an andriod. So does anyone know whether UK apps work on a canadian android phone in general, and the absolute radio app in particular?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Edward

P.S. any pointers to good map/gps/sat nav apps would be appreciated too!

Your Android phone comes preloaded with excellent Google Maps, Google Nav, Latitude, and a couple GPS apps. Between them you and your big rig can't possibly get lost in Canada (below the arctic circle; above all bets are off afaic) and you can find any address.
You don't really need anything else.

If you want more or other mapping, navigation, and/or tracking apps, there are dozens of them in the Market. Free and paid. Each slightly different from the next. Which one(s) you prefer is really a matter of personal taste.

Of course your location – within a network, or string of networks – is of prime importance for many of those apps to work as intended. I could imagine that Canada still has quite few 'white spots' on the phone network coverage maps where those apps would not function because they have no connection.

Having said that you may want to have a look at free MapDroyd, which pre-downloads selectable maps to be stored in your phone. Ideal for when you're out of range of networks. Or you might want to try the free Waze app, a turn-by-turn nav and community driven traffic alert system. Often quicker than the cops. Or the free Glympse app, for when you want to be tracked. By people you choose. Temporarily (max 4 hours)! E.g. so that the missus can permanently see in her web browser exactly where you're stuck in traffic on your way home and how pitifully little progress you make...

Can't really recommend a specific radio app. Sorry. I'm not the type to run around with earbuds in. I play my car radio...
But with the free AudioGalaxy app you can stream all your gigabytes of music from your PC or Mac at home to your phone.

I use TuneIn Radio here in the UK which I find excellent. I have just tried and can get Absolute Radio. There is a free ad-supported version but it is only 61p which is a steal.

I use Tunein Radio here in Vancouver Canada . I just checked Absolute Radio and there are 9 versions/stations available. I checked one of them and it is ok. The only one not available here is Absolute Radio Plus.
There is a free ad supported version and Tunein Radio Pro for 0.99 cents.
I hope this helps

Jim
