Windows 8 Consumer Preview

to sum it up in 1 sentence:

I like the changes they are making with Win8 but its a little too 'tablety' (if thats a valid word to use) because using it on a laptop was a tiny bit painful however overall, pretty nice.

I haven't tried either yet. I got the Dev preview way back when that first dropped, but I downloaded the wrong architecture ... so the install failed ;) Oops.

i agree winblows still blows :(

Downloading it now. ME3 beta and then release got in the way :P

I wonder just how different it is going ot be from the developer preview....

I'm a huge Win7 fan and to be honest I'm having trouble adapting to Win8. I just don't see why I should upgrade to 8 (as a PC user).

I did try the dev preview and the consumer preview. The new task manager is nice, but that's pretty much it.

yeah, i think i'll stick with win7 as much as i can . I dont see a need to upgrade to win8 just yet. I like that MS is trying to keep one style for all platforms (ie. Xbox, Windows, Phones) but they seemed to design Windows with tablets in mind and I dont agree with that.

I'm looking for a permanent way to disable the metro interface - if it can be done, then I might consider switching. There are tons of backend improvements on 8 that I just can't pass up.

I continued to play around with the consumer preview and there are a couple things that I would like to see implemented in Windows 8. I'm starting to like it... BUT:

1. I don't like Metro apps. I most likely won't use any of them.

2. I want to customize the tiles' backgrounds. Since I don't use metro apps, all pinned programs have the same background color with their name and a small logo.

3. What's the point of moving the desktop around? When I put the mouse on the top border, I can move it around as if it were a metro app. What can that accomplish?

4. Give us an option to change the Start menu background or to use our own "overlay".

5. Make it easier to bypass the start menu on start-up and avoid logging-in. I was able to accomplish both, but it's not user friendly at all.

6. Display all categories when searching from the start menu without having to click on "Settings" or "Files" when not searching for apps.

7. Make the grey background transparent when I bring up the "charms" on the right side of the desktop. It looks good before the background appears.

What do you guys think?

3. What's the point of moving the desktop around? When I put the mouse on the top border, I can move it around as if it were a metro app. What can that accomplish? multiple monitors....

4. Give us an option to change the Start menu background or to use our own "overlay". They'll be hacked soon enough....

5. Make it easier to bypass the start menu on start-up and avoid logging-in. I was able to accomplish both, but it's not user friendly at all. No, it's not, but I don't mind manual logins until I get biometric devices...

6. Display all categories when searching from the start menu without having to click on "Settings" or "Files" when not searching for apps. I've wanted something like this for search for a while, but I now use Xplorer^2 as my de facto file manager, and use its search instead...

It's not made for traditional KB and Mouse machines. That's all there is to it.

Not a fan of Win8. Really, really not a fan. Never liked Metro.

Got to say I agree. I'm sure in a few years I'll have no choice but to support it but for personal use, I'm sticking with a Windows 2008 R2 VM running on an Ubuntu Host.

Unless they have an "un metro" version, I see no legit reason to move past win7

I understand metro turns off? Not played in a while (Cant be bothered). 7 does it all. I use 2008 because its good for learning. Although I cant install all windows programmes, it covers most my bases.

I just got Win8 consumer preview copy installed yesterday on my HP Mini. Can't use any of the Metro jazz as my native rez is 1024x600 and it requires 1024x768 at least. It's a little pokey on this machine, what with only 1 gb of RAM. I'll trial it until it expires and then go back to ChromiumOS Lime.

Cheers, Dan

I liked windows 8 was very snappy, hate metro though, but with startbutton mods already existing, I don't think its anything I will have to worry about.
