Root Windows 8 Usb Drivers or Linux help to root 2.3.6

I have the admire with firmware 2.3.6. I have windows 8 and tried rooting it with the current usb drivers available. When I opened ODIN and put the phone into download mode there was no yellow com box like the guide said there would be so I did not want to proceed.

Does anyone know how to get drivers for windows 8? If not, my other option is using linux. I'm running Backtrack 5. But I have never rooted a phone using linux before and do not know how to get the drivers for the admire. If anyone could help. It would be much appreciated.

Why don't you use the 2.3.6 root method? or just flash a pre-rooted 2.3.6 rom?
 
That is what I want to do but Like I said I am running windows 8. The usb drivers installed fine except went I put the phone into download mode and open odin to flash anything to the phone windows 8 no longer recognizes the phone and gives an error message about the drivers.
I am doing this for a friend and I dont want to mess up there phone or else I would just attempt it.
So that is why I am asking if anyone else is running Win 8 and has successfully flashed anything with Odin or even got the drivers for this phone.

Well you do know rooting the admire doesn't require you to use odin right?
 
no I thought you had to use Odin to flash clockwork mod in order to flash the rootkit. can I flash the rootkit through Samsung's boot menu?

Oh yeah totally forgot about that lol. I thought you just meant in terms of purely rooting it like I thought you already had cwm installed. Where did you get the drivers from?
 
I got the drivers from a post on this forum
name is " SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86 "
But I just went to the samsung website and found drivers that are for windows 8. I checked the site before.
Must of been rushing. Hopefully, this will work now
