Which do you prefer, having the windows down in your car or the air conditioning?
I almost always prefer the windows down. The wind whether hot or cold is always nice for me. :)
I know it's quite polarizing for some folks. They will NEVER open the windows regardless how nice it is due noise or whatever.
What are your thoughts?

I've read studies regarding these two options relating to gas mileage. The consensus for optimal mileage:
If <~50, open windows
If >=~50, use AC

Around here as it's rather dusty and as many of the roads can be rather crap. Windows up, A/C on usually. We generally prefer to keep the Gobi Desert outside of the car. :thumb:

Something to bare in mind, running the A/C can actually cost you real money, as it uses some of the engine power to run it.

*Nerd Alert*

Yeah, I've been told depending on what speed your traveling, opening the windows cuts your gas mileage a bit vs running the AC, making it a wash.
Have to say, for me, if it's some great music I want to listen to, roll up the windows and crank the AC. Gas mileage be damned. :p

Oh, geesh, I thought this was something totally different! It said "Windows down," and I thought, "so what else is new? isn't window$ always down?"

I dont like smelling car exhaust or getting dust/dirt inside my car.

In my city, they implemented a program about 20 years ago to require repairs if the emissions do not pass certain standards or it cannot be insured. I found that within a year of that program, I found that it is not very often that I have issues with exhaust from the car in front of me.

The problem is that at very slow speeds, you do not get a good enough breeze to cool you down. At very low speeds, it is better to turn on AC in those cases.

I generally like rolling down the windows. I like to hear the traffic around me as it enables me to be more aware of vehicles in my blind spots.

I also find that A/C may give me a head ache after using it for too long. I've never gotten a head ache when having the windows rolled down. My cousin also said A/C gives him a head ache.

My only vehicle at this point, my '92 Pontiac Bonneville, has a frozen A/C compressor and someone before me had bought a belt to bypass it too, and it's one of them type that's so buried under the motor and front end that to replace it properly means removing half the engine out of the car to the tune of a huge bill, no thanks. For as long as i have this car, it's ECON mode and driver's window down. last year sucked though as we had temps well into the 110s...

Depending on the weather for me. It is not very hot or freezing cold, I will drive with the windows down. Other wise, windows up and ac/heat on!

I remember taking road trips in the family car back in the 70s. No AC in the car, driving to FL from TN with the windows down the whole 10 hours. Back then, kids had reason to bicker at each other. Now days, with AC, portable electronics, DVD players in the back....you kids better keep quite back there!

i'm more a sucker for heat rather than A/C. i've never been much of a cold weather person. i can't stand Winter. i once sold a truck (1989 Dodge Ram 250) just because the heater core exploded and i about froze to death driving it.

That's what I read - and pretty much what I stick with - too.

Have to say, living in the UK I rarely have occassion to do either ;) but this year we actually had a summer! :D

I'm pretty sure I've used the aircon more in the last 2 months than I did in the previous 7 years (i.e. since the last time we had a summer )

Talking of which, here's a strange but true for you: despite our lousy weather, the UK has more rag tops than any other european country :hmmmm2:

As of yesterday, I don't do either, I flip my visor up ;-)

After two and a half years if being caged up,I finally got my bike back on the road and boy was it fun! Wind in your face is way better than either of the options in the poll!

Though my gfs car(that I've been using recently) doesn't have air con so it was always Windows down!

when i rode motorcycles i had more trouble with them getting into my eyes rather than my mouth/nose if i had an open helmet or one with the visor up.

Depends on the weather, 65-80 with low humidity and I'm on back roads, windows down. Driving much over 60 I'll want the windows up, same if it's oppressively humid (which it sometimes is here in the summer).

Regarding the gas mileage thing, consider that the aerodynamics of the vehicle were engineered with the windows UP so you'll likely get better MPG on the highway with the A/C on and windows closed. At highway speeds it's windows up and A/C on for me.

Both? :p

If I'm in a rural setting and not too hot and humid? Windows down and sunroof open. In the city/suburbs with the dirt, congestion and kids blaring rap with massive sub woofers? Windows up, AC on. On highways, widows are always up for fuel saving and reduced noise.

My windows are almost always cracked open a bit, a/c or heat on or off, doesn't matter. I usually just have the windows open unless it's really hot or cold but even then at least my driver side window is open a smidge!
