Help wireless charging

Gerrybad

Newbie
Can anyone recommend a Qi charger please (for my S5 and MOTO 360). Read many reviews and lots of warnings about overheating, flashing lights to keep me awake at night..............anyone used one without issue?
Thanks in advance,
Gerry

I have two models but am not home where my bookmarks are.

Both came from Amazon. The 1st one I found cost $18.99 and included the charging pad. it has worked flawlessly since May, 2014.

The 2nd one, I also found bundled together the pad and the wireless receiver coil. This one cost me about $24.00 and it also works just fine. I like the 2nd one better because it has two LEDs on it, green and blue.

That really is a moot point though, as the 1st one had one LED but it changed color from green to blue.

So, that is a wash....

I would search Amazon and put a limit of $30.00 and see what shows up.

Thanks for the quick reply. Looked on Amazon think it maybe the Powerbot pb1020 for $18.99 that you have. Reviews complain about constant beeping when fully charged..........problem for bedroom use. Samsung OE suffers from being difficult to locate.
Got a few more days off for Christmas so will keep looking. Thanks again.

I use the PowerBot at the office and the Samsung Cradle next to my bed. I also use Timeriffic (in the Play Store) to totally silence the S5 at predetermined times, so there is no beeping when fully charged.

Thanks, having a play with 'Timeriffic' right now. G

I have found between the two that I have, that you best purchase both the pad and the wireless charger in a combo pack.
That way, you are guaranteed (better chance anyway) that the two will work together.

I have two models, my S5 and Qi charger is 8 months old and still works fine.
My wife's S5 and Qi charger are a couple weeks old and work fine.

However, neither charger with work with the other charging pad... They are specific to the pad that came with them.

That's interesting that they will only work with original bundled equipment. I am hoping to use mine for watch and phone. Maybe I've acted too soon. Does your receiver fit into the original S5 back? G

Yes, both receivers did fit inside the OEM back and do not show any bulges. That was a requirement for me.

I had thought that the "Qi wireless" charging was a specification and that any charger would work with any Qi receiver.

In my experience, (both phones have a Spec Candy Shell case on them) it seems to be that the field strength is the most critical issue. The case adds a bit of distance between the charging pad and the phone itself. I am wanting to think that this extra space is what is causing the problem. The two charging pads just may not be putting out the same amount of field strength.

I have no way to measure this field strength at the moment, so can't quantify it.

Thanks for the feedback. I can’t work out why your phones (with same cases) are not interchangeable between charge stations!

While I‘ve got a chance to talk to someone already using the technology, hope you don’t mind me asking a little more. One slight concern of mine is overheating. I know that inductive charging is less efficient than wired (transfer losses) so am expecting increased resistive heating, has this been an issue for you? G

Yes, the wireless charging technology does add a lot of heat.....

But, I have deduced that most of that heat is radiating upwards from the charging pad, and not being generated inside the phone.

The battery will always get warm when being charged, and the type of charging method should not have anything to do with extra heat... In fact, a wireless charger will actually generate "less heat in the battery" simply because it is not capable of pushing much more than about 750 milliamps into the battery. And that is with the OEM 2.1 amp charger adapter.

Yes, the Samsung Charging app shows that when first connected, the Wireless charger will initially peak out at 1200 milliamps, but it rolls back to about 750 milliamps pretty quick.

Since my phones both have wireless chargers installed in them, I try to put them back on the charging pads at about 60-70 percent. Why?
Two reasons:
1. it reduces the amount of time to get the battery to Full 100%, which causes the charger to turn off/(goes to idle) much quicker than a fully discharged battery will. This in turn, means that the charger will not have enough time to significantly generate very much heat.

2. recharging the battery in the upper 1/3 of its' capacity will help to prolong the battery life.

I have never replaced a battery in my Android phones. (I have bought spares, and then lost them from lack of use). This even back when the batteries were NiCad and had to fully discharged/Recharged to get maximum life out of them.... I just took care to do it the way it needed to be done.

I am a retiree from the world of communications and have worked on 2 way walkie Talkies with batteries, car radios, computers, 911 dispatching systems (last 20 years) and in all of that, I have found that if you will take care of the battery, it will last a very long time.

I have two laptops that are 10 years old/more.... One is an Apple Powerbook G4.... by today's standards that thing excruciatingly slow, and I also have a very old Panasonic Toughbook Cf-20 in the same exact situation. No memory, 250 mB hard drive, and slow is not a bad enough term to describe how it functions. .... but the battery in it is still good....

Wow lots of great advice and experience shared, thank you. Have a great 2015. G

I purchased the fonesalesman SlimPWRcard and pad for my wife's and my S5. I decided on this one because I still wanted to use the same case and this appeared to be the thinnest. My only issue with the pad is, even thought I purchased the pad with the optional mute feature, it still beeps when I put the phone on it. The phone also beeps. If you put the phone on the charger pad at night, it will charge, but once the battery drops it starts charging again. I'm sure that you might be able to regulate the notification volume of the phone, but I haven't done it yet. Over all, I'm happy with the purchase.

Ah, glad to get a real report on one by the fonesalesman.... I just ordered up a pad only because the two pads I have are not very good at charging my wife's S5. The Qi receiver in it is not nearly as good as the one I got for my S5 8 months ago. It is such a shot in the dark ordering anything now. You cannot rely on the "specifications" because they are so vague.

I chose this particular pad because of a single statement that mentions that it will works with an 8 mm thick case. Both of our phones have the Spec CandyShell Grip case and it is pretty thick which causes issues if the pad does not put out enough Field Strength.

I just ordered it up last night, delivery is on or before the 9th Jan. I will report back on this thread as to how well it does.

Just took delivery of a 'Ravpower' charge plate and separate 'affordable Mac' Qi charge wireless receiver. This really was a shot in the dark on spec (no way of knowing efficiency ratings or compatibility). Early findings: wireless receiver fits neatly into the S5 OEM case and the phone charges instantly on the charge station with no placement issue. Moto 360 watch charges easily too. Big but not unexpected issue though...........overheating. S5 really hot after 45 mins on charge, Moto warm don't think an issue. Probably need to get a temperature app for phone. Will post an update after more trials. G

The overheating you noticed, most likely because the S5's battery was down below 40-50 percent.

All of the charging pads are going to generate heat. And, think about it, where is that heat going to go?
The sides of the pad are too thin to remove any heat from the pad, so it must go "up" to the phone.

My habit has become, when the phone gets down to around 50-70 percent, and IF it is almost bed time, I just drop it on the charging pad. Not nearly so much heat generated that way, and it is actually a lot healthier for the battery to keep it in the upper half of its' capacity.

Now, if I am out and about, I use the phone until I get home and then it gets recharged..... be that 40% or 20%...

I have MacroDroid set up to "talk to me" and it says "battery low" at the 40% level. That doesn't mean I make a hurry rush to charge it up, it just reminds me that the next time I get close to my charging pads, I lay the phone on the pad.

To help you make choice, I have LuguLake Ultra-Slim Qi-Enabled Wireless Charger to suggest. price is neither cheaper nor expensive, but decent. It once has a black version, but this one has better quality, material and deal with the hot issue.
1.Works with any Qi-enabled devices or devices with Qi receiver installed
2. 1.5A or higher output wall adapter is required to make this charger work properly.
3. Input: 5V 2000mA; Output: 5V 1000mA; Charging Distance is 5mm, So protective cases that exceed 5 mm/0.2 inch thick prevent the charger from working properly
4. Dissipate the excessive heat for your phone and Qi charger, no hot issue.

Thank you for the LuguLake information. Are you saying there is no heating issue at all? Would expect a wall adapter to be included at the price (~£30) but willing to pay extra if no heat issues. G

I'm not saying no heating issue at all. I think every power battery something will produce heat, but this one is doing great in cooling it. No wall adapter actually.
