I'm sorry if this question been asked before, but my search came up empty.
I looked into one of these phones and was very surprised that I was not able to use the wireless connection w/o jumping into their $30 data plan
why should these two be connected you can't have one w/o the other, huh come on pretty lame to me.
It took me a few days to realize it that there should be a community driod users that will lead me to the right direction, and this is where my question comes into play.
If I root one of these things will it enable the wireless feature to work w/o the required data plan thru verizon? will i be able to surf, check email ect ect

They lock the phone under a particular "required" plan so all the phones fetures will be available.

Phone A is basic, and can text and talk. Plan A is fine for that phone.

Phone B the smart phone requires Plan A plus a data package. Basic phone services require transferring data across the net/servers. With out it all you could do is text and call.

But yeah you probably could root one and just use Wi-Fi. Maybe...

You don't have to root, simply buy one at full price and skip the cellular data plan activation.
