Root Wireless Tether and xbox issues

I have a rooted MT running the factory Froyo OS with the Wireless Tether app. I am trtongue to download updates and DLC to my Xbox through my phone, but after seeing and hooking up to the connection, the connection test fails. I've read similar posts but they are either closed or not exact enough.
 
Tethering never worked on my phone on Froyo. Cm7, miui, and cm9 all have built-in wifi tethering as features.

That's all that we're allowed to say due to forum policies since tethering is not allowed by VM.

Seriously though, tethering works best in the custom roms (cm7, cm9, miui) since the feature is built in and you don't have to hack the client machines to accept it.
 
I believe wireless tethering do not work on xbox and ps3 last i check. this was a year ago maybe it change but wireless tethering use ad hoc and ps3 and xbox does not support ad hoc. i tried to do that a year ago and that was suppose to be the case. so if you want internet on you xbox or ps3 you would have to do it wired. wire tether your phone to ur pc via usb then to give your xbox internet get an ethernet cable and connect it to ur xbox and pc then share the internet connection.
 
OK so it looks like a custom ROM is the only way to do this. Cm7 seems to be the most popular one, but I'm just not sure I want to take that leap yet. I am still not familiar with ROMs and backups for android devices yet.
 
The xbox connection will fail if the speed isn't fast enough. You'd have to have like LTE to actually do much of anything.
 
i actually had to use this one day my internet was down all day

as to not try to abuse it and to try and not have my connection throttled i wasen't using it to play any online gaming, just loggin in to play my games on-demand hdd saved games

i noticed it is pretty slow, but it will atleast allow you to log into xbox live, the only problem ive seen, well not really a problem for me cause i only ever used it to log in, but when it converts the 3g to a hotspot it locks it in as a closed or strict NAT, which anyone with an xbox knows causes most online play and parties to not function properly
 
Xbox LIVE needs at least a steady 5 mbps down and 1 mbps up. 3G data is bursty, inconsistent, and very problematic for Xbox LIVE. Even if everything works perfectly, you can't rely on it for gaming.
