Wireless tethering

Hi...

Quick question:

I have a Samsung Galaxy Fit (on which I also have a data plan) and an Acer Iconia A500 tablet. I used the Mobile AP to wirelessly connected between the two devices and to access the internet from the tablet via the phone.

My question is: How safe is this especially when I am using this in a public space like an airport or coffee shop etc.?

If it is not safe, please tell me how I can make it so.

Btw, both the phone and the tablet are not rooted.

Thanks in advance.

It's perfectly safe as long as you use the WPA2 security setting through mobile AP and have a password for it. Don't leave your phone's access point unprotected.

Thanks. I set it up and it works well. There was no need to root either device, which was kinda nice!

Perhaps you could try bluetooth tethering? It's more energy efficient and when you're set-up you can put your devices to undiscoverable.

You can get the Wireless tether app here:
android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

If you download version 2.0.7 you can use bluetooth tethering!

I tried that but I get the "paired but not connected" message. Besides, I would probably not want to root my devices yet. But this is good to know that there are multiple options. Thanks for highlighting them.

It's like securing any WiFi access point. There are guides out there on the internet that you can refer to. Enabling security (WPA2 suggested above) is one option. MAC address filtering can help if it's an option (it is for Wireless Tether for root). You can't make it 100% safe except by not using the feature at all. All you can do is make it safer.

Thanks. Well said...especially the last line. For the moment - as suggested above, I am using the WPA2 option.
