Word Docs + Gmail + Editing + S4 Heeeelppp!

Hi All!

So when I was on Blackberry I could easily edit an attachment in an email by selecting it, opening it in Documents To Go and editing away.

Now that I'm on Android Jelly Bean on a Samsung S4 I'm a bit stuck.

1) A client has sent me an MS Word Document as an email attachment for me to edit and send it back.

2) I access this email via the Gmail App

3) I then click on the Attachment tab and voila! It loads up in something called Polaris Office Viewer.

4) Polaris Office Viewer only allows me to edit the document with the freehand / handwriting tool. I've searched and searched but there is no Edit option or Type option.

5) I basically can't do anything with this file other than download it to the phone.
When I open it, it goes back into that stupid Polaris viewer (which is a Viewer only it seems and a Freehand editor - not a Type editor on my phone).

On the desktop version of Gmail I have two options: View or Download. If I chose View I have a plethora of Options and what I would select is to edit the file in Drive - which is great.

My questions:

How on earth do I edit a Word Document received as an email attachment in Google Drive?

How do I enable Editing in Polaris Office Viewer or remove it if this is not possible or at the very least stop it from intercepting Word documents (permissions)?

Item: I installed Documents To Go. Sadly the trial version is so limited I need to upgrade to edit even the most basic Word Doc and before I do I want to make sure all options have been exhausted - I'd rather use Google Docs when I'm using my phone or my laptop and use Ms Word when I'm on my Desktop.

Item: I have no icon for Polaris Viewer. I cannot locate Polaris Office Viewer in Application Manager, in the Apps selection, via Google Search (google search only the searches the web right, not the contents of my S4?), or in the Play Store (none of the available versions seem compatible). What on Earth is this thing?!

Item: I am a Windows 7 user. I use MS Word 2010 and Google Docs while on the Go.

I'd be most grateful for any help - I've tried googling but most folks seem to be able to Edit using Polaris - I can't :(

Merci!

1. Pay for Polaris/Documents to Go. There should be an option in settings to do so.

2. If you prefer a free option, download Kingsoft Office, or maybe Olive Office. Both are completely free office apps. With them installed, pressing on the attachment on Gmail asks you what app you want to open it in because now there are different options. You can set a default so you won't be asked again.

3. On your Gmail app, when you look at the attachment, on the right side there are three vertical dots. You can tap that and select "preview/save/download"

I have used Polaris, D2G, Kingsoft and a few others and ended up buying Office Suite Pro. It seems to do the best job in terms of editing Office Documents on the phone. I bought into the Office 365 idea when it came out and started using it at home. Recently I received an app for my phone that allows me to use 365 on the device. Office Suite Pro is still my preferred alternative. I have a Galaxy S4. If you go to the app manager and go to the "All" tab, you should be able to find Polaris and the you should be able to disable it. If I were in your situation, Office Suite Pro or D2G would be the two options that I would be reviewing.
