I'm not sure why developers would do this, but with an update about a year ago maps started automatically zooming out. So I'll be driving down the freeway with the map up showing me where I need to go, zoomed in to my location, and if you don't touch the screen it just randomly zooms out to show the entire trip. I have submitted so many requests I don't understand why they won't fix this I wonder how many accidents it may have caused already.

Yes if you're on a freeway it will show most of the route because there is no need to be zoomed in. When you get closer to your exit, it should zoom in

I find Google Maps to be a challenge to use from a usability standpoint. Seems like I always have to relearn things each time I use it.

I've found that every time I go to the UK, because I usually don't use Google Maps.

@Melissaru , are you using maps to plot your location on a route or are you using navigation? With navigation, your phone should show you the route to the next turn or exit only, zoomed out while travelling at speed and zoomed in as you slow or approach the turn.
