Unfortunately, with phones specially those that are not new and being sold on eBay, buyers are really rolling the dice. Even if new, no warranty because they are not being sold through authorized channels. You just don't know where the device is coming from nor it's history.
This is even more true when the device is so new as is the G2. You have to ask, why is the seller turning a great device?
I lost an LG Spectrum when I left it on my cars hood and drove off, and someone following me ran over it when it flew off the car at 50mph. It almost made it to the side of the road... anyway, I bought a new one off eBay that someone had won in an auction that was never activated. I saved a few hundred there, but like I said, there was no warranty through Verizon nor LG. I wouldn't do the same again.
I'm not sure if a custom rom might improve performance, but then you aren't really self sufficient to flash it.... wouldn't risk it with your grandson to do it.
Have you tried an app to boost volumes like Volume+
As for double tap... instead of tapping harder... try lighter and quicker.
